Timmele: Hollow Ways, Church Village and Accommodation

Four Hollow Ways and a Former Ford

The Timmele hålvägar consist of four parallel hollow ways. Individual sections reach up to 180 metres in length, ten metres in width and 4.5 metres in depth. The ways were once connected to a ford across the Ätran. At this compact site, you can see how a river crossing and the tracks worn into the ground over a long period were linked. These measurements describe the hollow ways, not the length of a currently marked circular route or the depth of the river.

Beside the hollow ways is a burial ground with 45 burial mounds and 15 circular stone settings. A walk here takes you through several layers of history, not merely a passage through the landscape. Its location by the river and north of the church makes the historical context easy to understand, without making claims about an unknown route or a particular visit duration. When planning, take account of the actual paths and the weather on the day of your trip; the fact that the hollow ways can be explored on foot does not mean they are cleared of snow in winter.

A Church Village at Full Scale and in Miniature

Timmele kyrka preserves a communion chalice dating from 1383, which is still in use. According to the church’s information, it is probably the oldest chalice in Sweden still in use. The word “probably” is part of this description; it is not a definitive ranking of every church in the country. For a specific visit, check the church’s current opening times as well.

Timmele Miniby depicts the church village at a scale of 1:10. The open-air model gives an idea of what houses and buildings in the area may have looked like around the late 19th century. It is not a documented, scale-accurate representation of every house at an exact date. Comparing the original site with the model offers two different perspectives on Timmele: a historic settlement in the landscape and an interpretive reproduction. Its outdoor location alone does not establish that it is accessible at all times.

This offers a different perspective on regional history from the hollow ways, burial ground and church objects.
