Botkyrka – Hotels amid Cultural Trails, Art and Nature

Botkyrka combines cultural-historical trails, vibrant art venues and diverse landscapes. From May to October, the municipality organizes walks and bus tours to culturally and historically interesting areas. The destination includes the localities of Botkyrka, Tumba and Grödinge. There are also opportunities for swimming: they can be found in inland waters, lakes and the sea.

Culture

One way to explore the local history is Kulturspår Botkyrka. The offering consists of three short, signposted walking trails that provide information about the history of the respective localities. The stations are supplemented by audio tracks featuring personal stories about the places. The three trails can be reached from the respective Fittja, Hallunda and Norsborg metro stations.

At Hågelby-Skrävsta, the signposted walking trails Skrävstastigen and Saltbergstigen pass through a landscape where visitors can learn how people lived here over the course of millennia. The landscape around Hågelby-Skrävsta has largely been preserved; archaeological sites and the agricultural landscape remain. Hågelbyparken contains a manor estate that is used as a public park. In Hågelbyparken, visitors can walk in the large park and visit the 4H farm. Hågelby Hus offers afternoon tea with scones and accompaniments, fine pastries and carefully selected teas.

Art and History

At Tumba Bruk Museum, exhibitions and the historic surroundings convey the history of Swedish banknotes as well as the lives of the people who lived and worked at the Tumba paper mill. The museum offers general guided tours of the mill and tours of the paper workshop. Visitors can make their own paper there.

Mångkulturellt centrum welcomes visitors to exhibitions, a specialist library, an art education workshop, programs, the MKC shop and the Tavernan restaurant. In terms of content, the center conveys knowledge, understanding and forms of expression relating to the impact and significance of migration on people’s lives in Sweden.

The grounds of Subtopia feature murals, stencil art and graffiti by artists from the surrounding area and beyond. A digital guide enables visitors to explore the site independently. Subtopia also includes Lilla Väggen, an approximately 20-meter-long urban art wall that is open to everyone around the clock.

Botkyrka konsthall in Fittja is dedicated to contemporary art. Its program includes exhibitions, guided tours, artist talks, workshops and performances. Admission to Botkyrka konsthall is free.

Botkyrka Church is the oldest church in the parish, whose origins date back to the 12th century. It was built in honor of Saint Botvid. At the entrance, the church has an accessibility-adapted ramp.

Trails and Activities

The approximately eight-kilometer-long Sankt Botvids pilgrimsled runs between Salem Church and Botkyrka Church. Along the trail there are six meditation sites and signposts; a brochure with a map and texts is also available.

At Lida there are three prepared mountain bike trails: a green trail measuring 2.8 kilometers, a blue one measuring 7.1 kilometers and a red one measuring 4.7 kilometers. The Accropark at Lida offers climbing, balancing and ziplining high up in the treetops.

Grödingeleden is a 32-kilometer section of the Sörmlandsleden. It runs from Lida via Grödinge and Näslandet to Skanssundet. Along the way, it passes archaeological remains, former farm ruins, hill forts and viewpoints, follows the shores of Stora Träsket and runs through old coniferous forest.

Nature

In the Vinterskogen nature reserve, the 3.2-kilometer Sjöslingan runs through old forest along the lakes Brosjön, Mellansjön and Övrasjön. Aspens naturstig is just over seven kilometers long and runs around the southern part of Lake Aspen. Along the way are cultural sites, several archaeological sites and wetlands with boardwalks and floating bridges.

In the eastern part of the Snäckstavik wetland there is an observation platform. From there, visitors can watch birds, including garganeys, whooper swans, spotted redshanks and green sandpipers.

The selection thus ranges from historic walking trails and museums to art, signposted long-distance trail sections, forest paths and wetlands.
