The Booleden trail runs through a varied landscape and connects notable natural and cultural landmarks. In Boo, the approximately 15-kilometre route begins at Boo hembygdsgård in Orminge and continues to Strömmen farm on the border with Värmdö. The Värmdöleden trail connects there. The Booleden passes lakes, viewpoints, prehistoric monuments and cultural heritage sites.

Hiking and Landscape

The Booleden alternates between forests, rocky areas, small forest lakes and meadows. A notable viewpoint is Himlaberg, which rises to a height of 70.4 metres. From there, the view stretches across forests and sea from Vaxholm to Tyresö.

You can reach the Rensättra nature reserve on foot from the bus stops at Boo kyrka and Myrsjöskolan. An Iron Age burial ground indicates that Rensättra was already inhabited in the 9th century. The protected area includes old pine forests on rocky ground. The trees are more than 150 years old, and some are as much as 250 years old.

The 2.7-kilometre Lila slingan trail also runs through the Rensättra nature reserve. It passes through meadows and horse paddocks, along waterways, through allotment gardens and spruce forest, and over rocky areas. Swimming is possible in the Rensättra nature reserve on the shore of Lake Sågsjön. The western part of the Rensättra nature reserve also contains a small climbing crag with fixed anchors in the rock.

Nature

The Velamsund nature reserve is located in eastern Boo and borders Värmdö Municipality. Velamsunds gård lies in a steep rift valley between Insjön and Velamsundsviken. The approximately two-kilometre Snigelstigen trail in Velamsund is designed as a walking path and combines the route with a quiz about the area's nature and culture.

The Velamsund nature reserve has easily accessible gravel paths suitable for walking or wheelchair use. However, they are not designed as circular routes. Runners can choose from, among others, a lit 2.5-kilometre route, the green 4-kilometre route and the red 6-kilometre loop.

At the lower end of Lake Rudsjön, the birdwatching tower and an accessible viewing platform offer views across the entire wetland and alder swamp forest. The Baggensstäket cultural reserve is intended to preserve and further develop old pine forests on rocky ground, coniferous forests rich in deciduous trees, deciduous woodland groves and shoreline areas. The reserve is also intended to preserve, further develop and provide access to valuable cultural landscapes and biodiversity. It has been established; boundary markers and information boards are still to be installed.

Culture and History

A cultural heritage walk in Boo covers the Russian devastation, Boo gård, the return of the plague and the Battle of Stäket. The cultural walk around Boo gård and Baggensstäket is 4.5 kilometres long and passes interesting buildings, parks, Iron Age burial grounds and remains related to military defence history.

For this cultural walk, it is currently recommended that you avoid the shoreline section at Gammeludden and instead follow the signs to Lugna promenaden.

Sacred Places

Boo kyrka hosts baptisms, weddings, services and funerals. People also meet there for pilgrimages, confirmation ceremonies and devotions, or for quiet conversations at the graves of their relatives. The interior of the church is inspired by early Christian Italian architecture and Romanesque basilicas. Its furnishings include a series of stained-glass windows depicting the Passion story, as well as wall and vault paintings by Olle Hjortzberg.

Boo kapell is situated above the outlet from Stäket into Baggensfjärden and belongs to Boo herrgård. The old chapel, dating from the 18th century, can be rented during the summer season for baptisms or weddings and has space for 75 visitors. Several musical evenings are held there in summer.

Waterways

Today, the Baggensstäket waterway is used mainly by recreational boats and for excursions, having lost its importance as a commercial transport route. Nacka can be reached from Stockholm by boat, car, bus, bicycle or the Saltsjöbanan railway; the journey takes approximately 10 to 20 minutes.
