Culture and Mining History
The Ermita del Cristo de los Mineros chapel is located in the Barrio del Cristo district of Caboalles de Abajo. Nearby stands the headframe of the Pozo María mine in Caboalles de Abajo. The two buildings mentioned are located close to each other in Caboalles de Abajo; the chapel is a religious building, while the headframe is a mining facility. Their spatial proximity and their different types of construction are both apparent. At the foot of the striking headframe of the Pozo María mine, the Feria del Libro de Laciana book fair takes place every spring.
The buildings and facilities of Pozo María are considered an outstanding historical reference point of industrial and mining architecture. Caboalles de Abajo was also home to the “Pedro Alvarez Carballo” and “Fernando Alvarez de la Puerta” foundations, which established two free schools. The traditional festival culture includes the “Vaqueirada,” a celebration dating back one hundred years. These historical references range from facilities and buildings to education and festival culture.
Cultural and Hiking Routes
A cultural heritage route in Caboalles de Abajo is just under 2.5 kilometres long. It has four large information panels and 16 QR codes. The route also includes codes in sign language. The route length, panels, QR codes and sign-language codes describe different components of the same route. The route length describes its spatial extent, while the panels and codes provide different forms of information. Information is conveyed not only along the route itself, but also through panels and digital or language-related codes.
Winter sports, culture and hiking can be classified as separate focuses without combining them into a single itinerary. These offerings represent different thematic focuses that you can consider independently of one another. This does not establish a fixed order for these topics. Las Brañas de Caboalles de Abajo is one of the hiking routes in Laciana.
