Winter and routes

The Puerto de Vegarada is a mountain pass between Castilla y León and Asturias; its ascent from the León side begins in Lugueros. The pass runs along the protected Picos de Europa area and offers views along the route.

The Roman road of La Vegarada features both well-preserved and almost vanished sections and is suitable as a hiking route. The path climbs to the Bustivela clearing; from there, magnificent views open up over the Lugueros valley and Pico Bodón.

A short, easy nature trail begins at Los Arenales on the Río Curueño. The Lugueros river bathing area is also located on the Río Curueño; a weir creates a cool freshwater pool there.

A cave can be visited as part of a guided tour and is equipped and illuminated from June to September.

Culture and history

In the early modern period, Lugueros was an important administrative centre; in the mid-18th century, the town had three notaries. Up to seven coats of arms are still preserved in Lugueros. The cemetery also contains a carved tomb slab preserved as evidence of the town’s history, safeguarded over the course of centuries.

The traditional three-storey mill of Lugueros stands next to a medieval three-arch bridge in the centre; the bridge was recently restored and crosses the river.

The bridge in Los Campos de Lugueros dates from the modern period, but rests on Roman foundations.

Lugueros preserves an extensive local songbook as part of its intangible cultural heritage. The town’s church is associated with a centuries-old pious tradition concerning a chalice: according to the tradition, it was brought to the village by carriers from Los Argüellos after they found it in an abandoned chapel.

On 14 September, Lugueros celebrates Día del Cristo and a cattle fair.

Traditionally, children in Lugueros received “Pan de Muyerinas”. It is associated with legendary female bakers who were said to have lived on the mountain of the same name.

Natural environment

The Los Argüellos Biosphere Reserve encompasses three municipalities. Numerous localities belong to these municipalities, including twelve named Lugueros.
