Salardú: Old Town, Church Art and Excursion Routes

Salardú between the Garona, Unhòla and Arantal

Salardú is situated on a rocky hill on the right bank of the Garona. The Unhòla River surrounds the centre of Salardú to the north and east. The 9 km between Vielha and Salardú run along the main valley floor of the Arantal beside the Garona.

Plaça Major and the fortifications of the old town

Plaça Major forms the centre of Salardú’s old town. Salardú had been fortified since the Middle Ages. Small remains of Salardú’s fortifications have been preserved near the church apse.

Sant Andrèu: Layout, bell tower and works of art

The church of Sant Andrèu de Salardú has a basilica-style layout with three apses. The bell tower of Sant Andrèu de Salardú has an octagonal layout and dates from the 15th century. The Crist de Salardú is a Romanesque carving from the late 12th century. The chancel contains an ensemble of Renaissance murals from the 17th century, which was restored in modern times.

PyrenMuseu, Mòla de Salardú and puzzle game

The PyrenMuseu is dedicated to the history of the Pyrenees and mountaineering in the valley before the advent of tourism. The restored Mòla de Salardú is located at Paratge dera Mòla on the Camino de Aiguamoig path. At the restored Mòla de Salardú, visitors can see how the hydraulic mechanism that powered the original mill worked. At the Mòla de Salardú, visitors can experience the process of processing wheat into flour. “El Asedio de Salardú” is a puzzle game in which visitors can solve clues and discover places of interest.

BTT, MTB and excursion routes

BTT Route 16 passes through Salardú, Gessa and Unha and allows visitors to see their churches and fortified houses. In Salardú, BTT Route 16 includes the church of Sant Andreu. Near Salardú, MTB Route 30 connects with several easy routes in the surrounding area. The access from Salardú to the Cirque de Colomèrs leads through the Val d’Aiguamòg, a peripheral zone of Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park. Salardú is a starting point for excursions to Banhs de Tredòs.

Events with a local connection

At the Santa Creu celebrations announced for 2024 in Salardú, the central programme on 3 May included a traditional meeting of the crosses and a mass in honour of Santa Creu. The date of the Salardú livestock fair is considered to be 7 October.
