Naklo – Cycling Routes, Nature and Culture

The basic cycling circuit runs through Naklo, Strahinj, Duplje and Podbrezje before returning to Naklo. The route is 16 km long and takes about 60 minutes without stops. The circuit begins in front of Naklo Primary School.

Cycling

Two further cycling routes are marked in the municipality of Naklo: the Kranj–Polica–Okroglo–Duplje route is 12 km long, while the Naklo–Udin Boršt–Naklo route measures 12.5 km. There are three bicycle rest areas in total along these routes. Their facilities include four tables, eight benches, two information boards, a horse-tethering device with a watering trough and two double waste bins.

The Na Okroglo excursion also begins at Naklo Primary School and leads via Dobrava to the village of Okroglo. It is 2 to 3 km long and takes about 20 minutes; an additional hour is allotted for sightseeing.

Nature

Naklo lies at an elevation of 407 metres in a dry valley through which the Tržiška Bistrica once flowed. Below Okroglo, groundwater emerges from a conglomerate wall and deposits lime on moss. The municipality is also home to the Kriva jelka forest reserve, with an entrance information board and a marked short visitor trail.

The Naklo Biotechnical Centre offers guided tours of the estate. These last from 45 minutes to three hours and are accompanied by professors as well as trained pupils and students. In Bistrica pri Naklem, two ponds offer year-round fishing experiences for experienced and recreational anglers as well as families.

Culture

The Church of Saint Peter in Naklo dates from 1735 and is considered the town's most important cultural attraction. The Church of Mary Magdalene stands on a rise below the manor house and is surrounded by a low wall.

Naklo was once a stop for merchants, carriers and travellers. As a result, crafts such as blacksmithing and wheelwrighting developed there, along with the hospitality industry. The Finfranje Festival takes place beneath Kriva jelka near Spodnje Duplje on the second Sunday in May; the site was formerly associated with gatherings of the Rokovnjači. The Voglarjeva circular route begins at the old railway station in Naklo, beside a museum steam locomotive.

The Poličarjeva Farm houses an open-air museum of millstones. It was established in memory of the family of millstone makers and their valued craft. In Duplje, there is a more than 200-year-old farmstead with an outbuilding and a cobbler's workshop. Today, as an ethnographic museum and cultural-historical monument, it comprehensively presents life in Duplje since the 18th century. The Pavlinova Gallery in Naklo holds exhibitions and presentations by local residents. The Slovene Ethnographic Museum assigns Naklo pri Kranju to the period from 1928 to 1947.

Cuisine

In the area surrounding Naklo, agricultural traditions involving buckwheat, buckwheat žganci and sauerkraut have continued to this day. In Naklo itself, buckwheat, buckwheat žganci and sauerkraut are likewise associated with an agricultural culinary tradition that continues to this day.
