Levoča District: Hotels and Accommodation

The historic center of Levoča is an urban monument reserve surrounded by relatively well-preserved city walls. Levoča is also home to the Church of St. James, a Roman Catholic parish church dating from the 14th century, which is one of Slovakia’s most important religious buildings. Its late Gothic wooden main altar of St. James is 18.6 meters high and was created between 1507 and 1517 in the workshop of Master Paul of Levoča.

Culture and History

Levoča’s Renaissance town hall houses a permanent exhibition on the history of the city. Another exhibition dedicated to Master Paul presents copies of sculptures made after original works by the Levoča woodcarver Master Paul.

Spišská Kapitula is home to the Cathedral of St. Martin, a late Romanesque three-nave basilica with a two-towered façade, built between 1245 and 1275. The cathedral also preserves a stone depiction of a reclining lion from the 13th century. Significant remnants of medieval wall paintings are preserved there as well.

Spišský Hrhov features several different historic architectural styles. The Kaštieľ Spišský Hrhov manor house was built in the Neo-Baroque style with Classicist elements; the Neo-Baroque Chapel of St. Anne adjoins the manor house. In addition, an older Renaissance manor house in Spišský Hrhov was part of the warning system of Spišský hrad Castle, which used light signals.

Spišský hrad Castle is located in the surrounding area. The ruins of Kláštorisko and the Spišská Kapitula monastery are also nearby. The Medvedzie Vrch mountain and the Sans-souci Church are located in the immediate vicinity.

Events and Museums

The Dni Majstra Pavla cultural festival pays tribute to Master Paul and to the generations of Levoča residents who contributed to the city’s artistic and historical heritage. The program includes carving, painting, and photography workshops, as well as presentations of traditional crafts by young artists and artisans. Tajomná Levoča is the closing event and highlight of this cultural festival. In past Tajomná Levoča events, there was a light show in the center of Levoča.

Levočské babie leto is an annual music festival held in historic Levoča. Levoča is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The MuzikMuzeum in Spišský Hrhov welcomes visitors on weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.; admission must be reserved by phone or email. The Museum of Special Education in Levoča also recommends reserving admission in advance.

The Resort Levočská Dolina bi swimming complex consists of three components: a pond, a swimming pool, and an external biological filtration facility. At Košická brána, two free park-and-ride parking areas are available at the city entrance for visitors arriving by car.

Nature

Torysky is set in a picturesque landscape of forests, pastures, and meadows suitable for peaceful walks and nature experiences. The Torysky–Javorina route offers views of Kráľova hoľa and leads to the Javorina–Marčulina observation tower.

The Brezová, Roveň, and Krúžok mountains are also located nearby.
