The ridge of the Spišská Magura is more than 30 kilometres long; its highest peak, Repisko, reaches 1,259 metres above sea level. Southeast of Jezersko lies Jezerské jazero, a protected natural formation below the steep slope of the Spišská Magura.

Nature and trails

The Dunajec Gorge lies partly in Kežmarok District and encompasses the cadastral areas of Červený Kláštor, Lechnica and Lesnica. A nature trail with ten stops runs through the gorge; visitors can travel along the Dunajec there on traditional wooden rafts.

The Pieninska cesta connects Červený Kláštor with Szczawnica and now serves as a nature trail and cycle route. In Malá Franková, there are the two nature trails Furmancova droga Dolným koncom and Furmancova droga Horným koncom. The nature trail in Malá Franková ends at a stream and a chapel, where visitors can observe the local wildlife.

The mountain Zvonárka and the wooden church with articulated status in Kežmarok are located in the immediate surroundings of Kežmarok District. The mountains Orlov, Hora and Križový Vrch are also located nearby.

Culture and history

In Kežmarok, the Evangelical articulated wooden church has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008. Kežmarok Castle is the only fully preserved castle in the Spiš region, while the Evangelical Lyceum houses the largest historic school library in Central Europe.

Kaštieľ Strážky displays a portrait exhibition from the 17th to the 19th century in the Spiš region. The Európske ľudové remeslo festival takes place annually in the historic centre of Kežmarok.

Original Goral buildings have been preserved in Osturňa, arranged in farmsteads with log houses, barns and stables. There, 157 structures have been designated as part of a heritage reserve. The inhabitants continue to wear the traditional costume of the Goral ethnic group.

Museums and connections

The J. M. Petzval Museum in Spišská Belá presents the development of photographic and cinematographic technology in J. M. Petzval’s birthplace. It comprises more than 600 exhibits on the history of photographic optics and displays a collection of camera shutters as well as an area devoted to the origins of cinematography.

A cycle path connects Spišská Belá and Kežmarok and leads through the English park at Kaštieľ Strážky.
