Hrkovce: Accommodation, Vineyards and Local History

Hrkovce lies on the northern bank of the Ipeľ River and combines a distinctive landscape with a local history that has developed over centuries. The first written mention dates from 1156. Between the river, streams, vineyards and historic buildings, a clearly recognisable local character emerges, complemented by recurring festivals and local amenities.

Landscape

The Krupinka stream forms the eastern boundary of Hrkovce, while the Štiavnička stream marks the western boundary. The village lies in the Ipeľská pahorkatina uplands at an altitude of 125 to 205 metres above sea level. The valley near Hrkovce is less than 3 kilometres wide between two mountain ranges. The geographical setting is therefore defined by its river location, two bordering streams and a comparatively narrow valley area.

History and Religious Buildings

One of the most prominent buildings is the Roman Catholic Church of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, a Baroque-Classical church built in 1770. It survived the fire of 29 July 1808, when Hrkovce was almost completely burned down. The church is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose. Hrkovce is also home to the Chapel of the Most Holy Redeemer, dating from 1900.

Winegrowing

The vineyards are also part of the local landscape. The agricultural cooperative of Hrkovce manages 25 hectares of vineyards. The vineyards are also home to a statue of Saint Urban, the patron saint of winemakers, holding a bunch of grapes. There are wine cellars there as well. Local Life

The Hrkovce summer festivities have been held annually since 1999. Every year, they include a football tournament between single and married men at the local football pitch. During the summer festivities, Baňa, a natural amphitheatre in the vineyards of Hrkovce, is used for community entertainment.

At the entrance to Hrkovce, there is a recreation park with various climbing frames for children and benches for resting. There is also limited water management activity focused on recreational fishing, water protection and environmental protection.

Transport

Hrkovce has a railway stop on the Šahy–Zvolen railway line. The railway line passing through Hrkovce was built in 1899. There is also a bus stop with connections towards Šahy–Levice–Nitra–Bratislava and Šahy–Dudince–Zvolen–Banská Bystrica.
