Nová Bašta between Volcanic Landscapes and History
Accommodation in Nová Bašta
Nová Bašta is located in the Cerová vrchovina volcanic mountain range, in the valley of a tributary of the Gortva. Its location connects the town with a distinctive landscape and with several protected areas that directly concern its cadastral territory. At the same time, Nová Bašta tells a story of a long ecclesiastical and regional history. Those who view the town as a travel destination will therefore encounter a combination of protected landscape, mountains, historic ecclesiastical architecture and traditional crafts.
Nature and Landscape
The cadastral territory of Nová Bašta lies within the Cerová vrchovina Protected Landscape Area. The CHA Beležír protected area also extends across this cadastral territory. CHA Beležír covers an area of 616,744 square metres. Another protected-area designation is the Cerová vrchovina and Rimavská kotlina Natura 2000 protected area, to which the cadastral territory of Nová Bašta belongs. Several spatial levels thus exist side by side: the Protected Landscape Area, the separate CHA Beležír protected area and the Natura 2000 area designated Cerová vrchovina and Rimavská kotlina.
The nearby surroundings are also defined by named mountains. Mount Geď is located in the vicinity of Nová Bašta, as is Mount Medves. Mount Ragáč lies in the surroundings of Nová Bašta; Mount Szilvás-kő is also located in the surroundings. The different designations of the spatial relationship are retained: Geď and Medves belong to the nearby area, while Ragáč and Szilvás-kő are assigned to the surroundings.
History and Culture
Nová Bašta was first mentioned in writing in 1267. The former name Kostolná Bašta reflected the town's role as a parish centre for the surrounding area. This ecclesiastical function is also connected with the history of the fortification: a fortified church made Nová Bašta a defensive bastion for the surrounding area.
The centrepiece of the local ecclesiastical history is the Romanesque Roman Catholic Church of St. Stephen in Nová Bašta. It dates from 1397 and was rebuilt several times. The building therefore combines its medieval year of origin with an architectural form that changed over a longer period. Local crafts included stonework and masonry, which have been passed down as another cultural connection of the town.
Regional Context
Nová Bašta is one of the municipalities in the Slovak part of the Novohrad-Nógrád UNESCO Global Geopark. This regional context complements its immediate location in the Cerová vrchovina volcanic mountain range and the protected areas of the cadastral territory. Together with the mountains Geď, Medves, Ragáč and Szilvás-kő, this creates a geographical context in which the natural environment, local history and regional geopark affiliation stand side by side.
