Detva: Ski Hotel, Folk Culture and Natural Monuments

Detva combines a strong connection to folk culture with museums, protected buildings and natural monuments in the surrounding area. There are also marked trails, guided tours, regional products and hands-on activities. This creates a diverse local character in which cultural themes and the landscape stand closely side by side.

Culture and History

An important symbol of regional folk culture is the Fujara. It is closely connected with Detva's traditional folk culture and was added to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List in 2005. Folklórne slávnosti pod Poľanou have also long been part of the cultural calendar: Detva has hosted the folk festival since 1966, with the event based on traditional folk culture. It takes place every year on the second weekend of July.

Historical buildings include the Roman Catholic Church of Saint Francis of Assisi. It was built between 1803 and 1805 and has been preserved as a protected cultural monument. The Vagač House in Detva offers another historical connection. The first bryndza cheese dairy in Slovakia was founded in this historic building in the 19th century.

Folk Music at the Podpolianske Museum

The Podpolianske Museum focuses on several aspects of regional culture. The “Instrumentum Excellens FSP Detva” exhibition on folk musical instruments displays 118 instruments by 47 makers from Slovakia. The permanent exhibition on Slovak folk musical instruments uses educational and interactive elements. Another permanent exhibition, “Ovce moje, ovce...”, presents Vlach culture in the Podpoľanie region.

The museum offers cultural and educational activities for visitors of all age groups throughout the year. It also offers creative art workshops with a regional character. The museum programme therefore includes both the observation and communication of folk culture and practical, creative formats.

Natural Monuments and Marked Trails

The Melichova skala natural monument is located near Detva, taking the form of a columnar rock above the settlement of Skliarovo. It is the surviving remnant of the front of a lava flow and displays formations created by flowing lava. A blue-marked hiking trail leads around the rock.

The Kalamárka natural monument is also located near Detva, north of the city. Kalamárka is visited by tourists and serves as an educational and specialist illustrative site. The red-marked Rudná magistrála hiking trail and the Kalamárka educational trail lead from Detva to this natural monument. The two trails already differ in their markings and their respective names.

City Activities and Regional Products

The Detva Tourist Information Centre offers the interactive game “Magická cesta ku klenotom Detvy”. Visitors explore the city through interactive tasks, puzzles and entertaining stations. A tourist experience package in Detva combines visits to the city's most interesting places with tastings of regional products and the opportunity to take part in creative workshops with craft makers.

For accompanied exploration, the Tourist Information Centre offers guided tours of the city and its surroundings. These also include Kalamárka and Poľana. The tours are offered in Slovak, English and French.

Trails through Detva

Detva's sights can be reached on foot, by car, by bus or by bicycle via local roads, marked cycle paths and marked hiking trails. These different routes and means of transport are just as much part of the documented local offering as the cultural institutions, natural monuments and guided programmes.
