Podkriváň – Culture, Nature and Historical Sites

Podkriváň is located in Pohroní Poľany in the Zvolen Basin. The village lies on the route connecting Lučenec and Zvolen, as well as on the boundary between the Slovak Ore Mountains and Javorie. Podkriváň includes natural areas, religious buildings, historic agricultural structures and regional events.

Nature

The natural environment includes the Krivánsky potok natural monument. It protects the upper course of the Krivánsky potok over a length of approximately 2.65 kilometres and also includes the riparian vegetation. The protected area is therefore defined not only by the stream itself but also by the accompanying vegetation.

The protected and endangered ostrich fern (Perovník Pštrosí), water forget-me-not and glandular toothwort grow in the natural monument. These three plants are part of the specific species composition of the Krivánsky potok natural monument.

Culture

Podkriváň is home to the Roman Catholic Classicist Church of Saint Martin, Bishop and Confessor. The church was built in Podkriváň in 1803. The village is also home to the Chapel of Saint Anthony of Padua, dating from 1856.

Horná Bzová has a filial chapel of Our Lady of Perpetual Help dating from 1910. Podkriváň also has the grave of Anton Emanuel Timko with a gravestone. Thus, in addition to churches and chapels, a named grave monument is also among the locally listed cultural sites.

Further architectural evidence is connected with the former glassmaking and milling industries. A new glassworks was built in Podkriváň in 1849–1850, producing greenish hollow and sheet glass. The municipality also has a watermill building that belonged to Štefan Francisci in 1930 and was powered by an overshot water wheel. Several log houses can be found in the Laz settlements.

Routes and Events

The 117-kilometre-long Novohradská cyklomagistrála, Route 013, passes through Podkriváň. Its route runs through Detva, Podkriváň, Divín and Lučenec. The village is therefore part of a named regional route connecting several places.

The “Podkriváňska šesťdesiatka” event reached its 45th edition. The “Tradičná chuť Podpoľania” event was scheduled to take place in Podkriváň on 22 June 2024.
