Museums, collections and written culture
The Muzeum Śląska Cieszyńskiego was founded in 1802 by the Rev. Leopold Jan Szersznik. It is considered one of the oldest public museums in Central Europe and the oldest public museum in Poland. Its permanent exhibition, “At the Border of History and Cultures,” deals mainly with the history and culture of the nobility, townspeople and rural population of Cieszyn Silesia. The exhibition thus focuses on different social groups and their culture.
The Książnica Cieszyńska offers another way to explore regional history: it holds more than 130,000 printed volumes, including around 18,500 old prints and 17,000 manuscripts. Its statutory duties include disseminating knowledge about the written culture of Cieszyn Silesia through exhibitions and academic conferences. The Książnica is based in the so-called Bludowski House. The building was created in the 18th century by converting a former ducal mint dating from the 13th century.
Castle Hill, architecture and design
Castle Hill is home to the Rotunda of St Nicholas, considered one of Poland’s oldest architectural monuments. The Gothic Piast Tower also stands on Castle Hill; it is 24 metres high. The two buildings represent different architectural themes: the rotunda reflects sacred architectural history, while the tower represents Gothic architecture. Zamek Cieszyn, meanwhile, focuses on entrepreneurship and design. The centre is housed in a Neoclassical hunting lodge built by the Habsburgs.
Printing, crafts and brewing tradition
The Muzeum Drukarstwa commemorates the printing traditions of Cieszyn Silesia and preserves unique collections as well as machinery that is still in working order. This allows visitors to explore printing history through both objects and surviving technology. The Izba Tradycji highlights the Cieszynka hunting rifle, which began to be manufactured in the second half of the 16th century. The Arcyksiążęcy Browar Zamkowy Cieszyn offers a different focus: the brewery has operated continuously since 1846 and produces beer using traditional methods. Together, these themes show different aspects of craftsmanship, technology and local history.
Walking routes and finding your way outdoors
Cieszyńska Wenecja is a tourist attraction and a walking area. The artificial Młynówka canal there dates back to the 16th century. The Szlak Kociej Szajki leads to Castle Hill, the Market Square and Cieszyńska Wenecja, providing three different destinations to help you find your way around the city.
A combined walking and cycling route runs along the revitalised banks of the Olza by the Open Air Museum. The tour of the Open Air Museum Cieszyn–Český Těšín begins on the Polish side at Hala Widowiskowo-Sportowa. It follows Aleja Piastowska across the Friendship Bridge and continues along the Czech bank. The route description thus takes you across the bridge from the Polish side to the Czech bank.
