Szczyrk: Mountain trails and culture between two peaks

Mountain setting and hiking trails

Szczyrk extends across elevations of 460 to 600 metres. These should be distinguished from the peaks of the two mountains whose slopes surround the town: Skrzyczne reaches 1,257 metres, while Klimczok reaches 1,117 metres. These figures provide an indication of the town’s location and the elevations of the neighbouring peaks.

Hiking trails starting in central Szczyrk lead to the summit of Skrzyczne in about two and a half hours. This is an approximate guide to the uphill journey; allow time for the return trip when planning your day. There is also a trail junction in the centre, with routes towards Skrzyczne, Klimczok, Przełęcz Karkoszczonka, Błatnia, Przełęcz Salmopolska and Skalite. This gives you a choice of several named destinations and directions, while the approximate walking time to the summit of Skrzyczne offers a concrete time reference.

Routes along the Żylica and along the mountain ridge

The developed path along the Żylica is used year-round by residents and visitors. It is also suitable for cyclists and, when conditions are suitable, for cross-country skiing. The route runs from the town hall via Plac św. Jakuba and the Skalite Amphitheatre to Skalite. It then connects with the cycle route in Buczkowice and Rybarzowice. The round trip is listed as approximately 20 kilometres; this includes sections of the onward connection outside Szczyrk.

The Pętla Szczyrkowska, a family route, offers a different way to combine several trail sections and mountain railway rides. It includes almost six kilometres of mountain railway rides, two kilometres through Szczyrk and two kilometres along a scenic mountain ridge. One ticket allows you to use four mountain railways in any direction. When planning, it is helpful to consider these sections separately: the walking routes through the town and along the ridge complement the mountain railway rides. Check their current operating hours before your visit.

The district of Salmopol provides another point of reference. The lower station of a gondola lift, which goes to Hala Skrzyczeńska at an elevation of 1,000 metres, is located on the main road. If you plan to take this ride, check the operating hours for your visit. This lets you plan the mountain railway as a separate activity without confusing it with the hiking trails starting in the centre.

Cultural attractions and events

The Skalite Amphitheatre is a venue for major cultural, entertainment and sporting events. The programme varies; if you want to plan your trip around a particular event, check the dates before booking. The Mountain Museum is located in the amphitheatre’s grandstand building. The museum and event venue are therefore at the same named location, but offer different experiences: visiting the museum and attending an event are separate ways to plan your stay.

The wooden Sanctuary of St James the Greater, which is over 200 years old, is also one of Szczyrk’s cultural attractions. Its ornate interior highlights the parish’s highland traditions. The Bator Art Gallery, founded in 1995 on the initiative of Barbara and Mirosław Bator, offers a different cultural experience. Together with the Mountain Museum and the Skalite event venue, it expands the range of options beyond the trails and mountain landscape.
