Transport History and Churches

In the Middle Ages, the village of Sillano was a strategic transport route. For a long time, Sillano was one of the few passes connecting Central Italy with Northern Italy. A pass is a crossing through a mountain range; an oratory is a place for prayer or devotion. The Chiesa del Carmine is the second-oldest church in Sillano Giuncugnano. Construction work on the oratory of the Chiesa del Carmine began on 26 March 1580. The present building preserves almost all of its original sandstone architectural elements, including cornerstones, cornices, door and window surrounds, and lintels. A cornice is a projecting architectural element, while a lintel forms the upper closure of an opening.

Madonna, Inscription and Fiera

The population of Sillano completed construction of the Chiesa della Madonna del Ponte in just three years. The Chiesa della Madonna del Ponte was built at the place where, according to tradition, a painting of the Madonna with San Nicolao and San Biagio shed tears for several days on 6 August 1730. An ancient Latin inscription is still visible inside the church of S. Bartolomeo in Sillano. The Fiera di Sant’Antonio includes a procession through the streets of Sillano. A procession is a religious festive parade. In Sillano, the Fiera di Sant’Antonio takes place on the Sunday after the feast day of Saint Anthony of Padua on 13 June.

Park, Lake and Mountains

Parco dell’Orecchiella is a protected nature reserve. A nature reserve is a protected landscape area. Parco dell’Orecchiella extends, among others, across the municipalities of Piazza al Serchio, San Romano, Sillano and Villa Collemandina. Lago di Vicaglia is located near Sillano on the municipal road connecting Sillano with Parco dell’Orecchiella. Lago di Vicaglia has steep shores and is surrounded by well-maintained chestnut woods. Lago di Vicaglia near Sillano is a fishing destination; its waters are classified as salmonid waters, and brown trout are caught in Lago di Vicaglia. Brown trout belong to the salmonid family. The summit of Monte Posola is located in the immediate vicinity of Sillano. The summit of Monte Tondo is located in the vicinity of Sillano. The mountain Monte Sillano is located in the vicinity of Sillano. The mountain Monte Ischia is located in the vicinity of Sillano.
