Historic Centre
The historic centre of Santa Fiora is located on a trachyte hill. It is divided into the three neighbourhoods of Castello, Borgo and Montecatino. This three-part division shapes the historic structure of the town and gives the centre a clearly organised form.
The Museo della Contea conveys the history of Santa Fiora through historic interiors, documents and portraits from the private Sforza Cesarini collection, as well as through a multimedia presentation.
La Peschiera: Historical Development and Nature
La Peschiera began as a medieval basin for trout farming. In the 15th century, the Sforza family transformed La Peschiera into an aristocratic garden. In the 19th century, La Peschiera became an English-style park. The name used today thus preserves several clearly distinguishable phases in the site's development.
La Peschiera is home to trout, mallards and swans. The surrounding vegetation includes fir trees, cypresses, magnolias, oaks and chestnuts, among others. La Peschiera is also free of architectural barriers.
Parish Church and Mining History
The Pieve delle Sante Flora e Lucilla has been mentioned since 1142. The Pieve delle Sante Flora e Lucilla features Gothic and Renaissance elements. Its documented mention therefore dates back to the 12th century, while its design also reveals different periods in art history.
The Museo delle Miniere di Mercurio del Monte Amiata includes a reconstructed underground tunnel created by miners, illustrating the working environment in mining. The Museo delle Miniere di Mercurio del Monte Amiata also has an archaeological section with finds from the 3rd century BC. In five exhibition rooms, the Museo delle Miniere di Mercurio del Monte Amiata presents the history of mining and the related developments that shaped the Monte Amiata area between the 19th and 20th centuries, particularly in the area between Santa Fiora and Castell’Azzara.
Festivals, Music and Regional Products
The patronal festival Festa delle Sante Flora e Lucilla takes place every year on 29 July. The festival includes a procession through Santa Fiora with the relics of the two saints.
The Santa Fiora in Musica festival features a summer programme from June to September. The concerts take place at the Teatro Andrea Camilleri and the Auditorium della Peschiera in Santa Fiora. The XXVII Santa Fiora in Musica festival, night-time excursions in the woods, and markets for local produce and handicrafts had also been announced for the summer in Santa Fiora.
Santa Fiora is crossed by the Strada del Vino Montecucco e dai sapori dell’Amiata. The route is intended for discovering regional products such as Montecucco DOC and Monte Amiata chestnuts IGP.
