The Rocca Aldobrandesca is one of the oldest and best-preserved medieval castles in the Amiata area. Construction of the Rocca Aldobrandesca probably began around the year 860 on existing structures dating from the Lombard period. The building history of this structure therefore probably dates back to the middle of the 9th century.
The Museo del Paesaggio Medievale is located on the top floor of the Castello Aldobrandesco in Arcidosso. Merigar can also be explored on foot outside the scheduled opening days. Access to the buildings may not be possible at those times. When planning your visit, it is therefore important to distinguish between exploring the grounds on foot and accessing the buildings.
The MACO houses a collection of more than 5,000 objects. These include Asian art, handicrafts and ethnographic artefacts from the Namkhai Collection. The collection therefore represents an independent cultural point of reference, without requiring its individual objects to be assigned to a particular period or a single place of origin.
Nature on Monte Amiata
The Parco Faunistico del Monte Amiata was established in the 1990s on the initiative of the municipality of Arcidosso to protect the animal and plant species found on Monte Amiata. The Riserva Naturale Monte Labbro covers approximately 60 hectares of chestnut groves. The chestnut groves are located mainly on the northern slope of Monte Labbro.
Guided Trails and Trekking
On the guided trails in the Parco Faunistico del Monte Amiata, visitors can observe free-ranging red deer, fallow deer, roe deer, mouflon and the Apennine wolf from a distance. An approximately three-hour trekking route in the Parco Faunistico del Monte Amiata leads to the summit of Monte Labbro. From the summit of Monte Labbro, the view extends across the entire valley to Argentario. The approximate duration of the route and the view at the destination give the tour a clear timeframe and scenic character.
