Vattaro: Nature, Culture and Trails on the Moraine Terrace

Landscape and Location

Vattaro lies at the foot of Doss del Bue on a moraine terrace at an altitude of around 700 metres. Its elevation gives the town a distinct alpine setting. Vattaro is surrounded by meadows, forests and old orchards. The surroundings are green and fragrant; here, the town offers relaxation in close contact with nature.

Pear and Festa della Pera

Festa della Pera is considered one of Vattaro's most representative events. The event is dedicated to the pear as well as local flavours, traditions and knowledge. Its programme includes tastings, markets, music and cultural contributions. In Vattaro's historic centre, there was a market featuring producers and hobby vendors, as well as the sale of Torte de peri. At this festival, the pear appears as a theme, a market product and an ingredient in regional dishes.

A gastronomic workshop at Festa della Pera explained the preparation and tasting of pear-based dishes and desserts, including Torte de peri. Parco delle Pere was established in 2012 as a small field. Fruit varieties that had been widespread in the area many years earlier were planted there. A walk from Vattaro town centre to Parco delle Pere was also part of a Festa della Pera programme and served to provide more information about the pear.

Historic Places and Regional History

Palazzo Bortolazzi is a historic palace in Vattaro dating from the late 17th century. The building has a cylindrical turret and a series of loopholes below the top of the tower. Palazzo Bortolazzi contains frescoes by Erasmo Antonio Obermuller depicting rural life. The architecture and frescoes shed light on different aspects of the same historic site.

A discovery route across the Altopiano della Vigolana begins in Vattaro at Villa Bortolazzi and the adjacent chapel. The chapel is dedicated to Saints Roch and Sebastian. Vattaro has a long history of traditional farming practices. The caradori came from Vattaro; these hauliers travelled between Trento and Feltre and sold fruit and wood. The route and the history of the caradori complement the architectural evidence with regional routes and occupations.

Trails for Different Interests

Vattaro has themed trails for several forms of activity. They can be covered on horseback or traversed using Nordic walking; mountain bike routes can also be used. The themed trails focus on historical, sensory, culinary or activity-related themes. Nordic walking means walking with poles and is therefore different from travelling on horseback or by mountain bike. From Vattaro, the 60 km della Vigolana can be traversed. The pear, historic places and various forms of activity are therefore among the specific themes found in Vattaro along the trails and at events.
