Wolfsthurn Castle and the Churches of Mareta
Wolfsthurn Castle stands on a hill above Mareta near Sterzing. Since 1996, Wolfsthurn Castle has housed the South Tyrol Museum of Hunting and Fishing. On the second floor of the South Tyrol Museum of Hunting and Fishing are original, well-preserved state rooms with furniture, paintings, fabric wallpaper with hunting motifs and a crystal chandelier. The parish church of St. Pankratius in Mareta combines various architectural styles and has two golden reliefs. The cemetery chapel in Mareta contains life-size depictions of male and female Death in its side niches.
Forest, Water and Gorge
The approximately one-kilometre-long Forest and Water Trail from Mareta includes stations such as the forest telephone and the wolf pit; its approximate length provides a clear framework for planning the route. The Forest and Water nature trail begins opposite Mareta Parish Church, leads through the forest along the Mareiter Bach and ends at the castle pond. The hike through the Achenrain Gorge begins in Mareta behind the Hofmannsteg and follows the Fernerbach into the gorge; the access point and the stream course serve as fixed reference points for planning the route. The hiking route through the Achenrain Gorge passes a section of trail surrounded by old dry-stone walls dating from the era of ore mining.
Cycle Path, Ore Route and Craftsmanship
A cycle path runs along the Mareiter Bach to Sterzing; Sterzing thus provides a clear destination point for planning the route along the stream. The “Upper Ore Route” educational trail begins in Mareta and follows the former route used to transport ore from the Monteneve mine. The Zössmayr stone-cutting workshop in Mareta shows how pendants and other jewellery are made in a 400 m² exhibition area. Visitors interested in culture can see not only the jewellery there, but also how it is made.
Mountain Ridge and Stream Landscape
A hike from Mareta leads to Mareit Stone, a long mountain ridge over 2,000 metres high with views of the Ratschings and Ridanna valleys as well as the Stubai Alps and their glaciers. The elevation and the long ridge give the hike a distinctly Alpine character. The Unterackern biotope on the Mareiter Bach has been extensively revitalised in its lower reaches.
