Hiking trails from Scareno to Alpe Piaggia
The route from Scareno to Alpe Piaggia and back is signposted as trail R11. The Giir di Curt di Scareno climbs steadily along switchbacks through ancient chestnut forests to Alpe Piaggia and is a hiking route through the alpine farmsteads known as “Curt”. Alpe Piaggia is a starting point for ascents to the summits of Monte Zeda and Marona.

Chestnut forest and Ponte del Dragone
Ponte del Dragone is located approximately halfway along the route from Scareno to Alpe Piaggia. A centuries-old chestnut forest stretches on both sides of the path between Ponte del Dragone and Alpe Piaggia. A programme by Parco Nazionale Val Grande followed the path from Scareno to Ponte del Dragone to provide information about the gold prospectors in Val Grande. At an event organised by Parco Nazionale Val Grande, access to the Pian Vadà bivouac from Scareno was described.
Churches, oratories and memorial sites
The Chiesa di San Michele in Scareno was built in the 18th century and later extended and embellished. The Chiesa di San Michele has a finely decorated interior with a vaulted ceiling. The Oratorio della Madonna del Rosario near Alpe Piaggia has preserved its original architecture almost unchanged. On the uphill path from Scareno, shortly before Alpe Piaggia, a small monument with an iron cross commemorates the partisans who fell on 16 June 1944.
Festivals and food in Scareno
The Madonna del Carmine is celebrated in Scareno on the third Sunday in July. The traditional festival at Alpe Piaggia takes place every year on the second Sunday in July. The San Michele festival is celebrated in Scareno on the first Sunday in October. The Circolo di Scareno offers lunch, dinner and light meals.
Trails between Scareno and Aurano
The Sentiero del Patrimonio di Aurano has Aurano and Scareno as its starting and return points. A mule track connects Aurano with Scareno, passing by the Vallone dei Mulinasch. The valley of the Rio Scarnasca lies between Aurano and Scareno, with numerous farmsteads and scattered buildings on the slope above it.
Buildings and local history
The ossuary near Scareno was built between 1945 and 1946 and preserves the remains of several partisans from the Cesare Battisti Brigade. An old residential building in Scareno has preserved its original construction, with unplastered stone pillars and chestnut-wood loggias. According to local tradition, the name Ponte del Dragone derives from a family that held the mining rights to a small gold mine in the 17th century.
