From 1928 onwards, Bognanco mineral water was bottled using the first fully automated process in Italy. According to tradition, the mineral waters of Bognanco were discovered in 1863 after a local shepherdess noticed the “burning” taste of the spring water she had been drinking. The local history therefore includes both the story of the discovery and the technical step of automated bottling. The Via del Monscera connects the Sacro Monte Calvario in Domodossola via Bognanco and the Passo di Monscera with Gondo, where the Via del Monscera joins the Stokalperweg. The Stokalperweg leads over the Simplon Pass to Brig. A trekking route, a connection over a pass and a trail that joins another route each mark distinct sections for orientation.
Val Bognanco and Bognanco Fonti
The fourth stage of the Via Stockalper also passes through Val Bognanco and includes the thermal centre and the Dagliano gorges in Bognanco Fonti. The pedestrian circular route in Bognanco Fonti was formerly generally known as Passeggiata dei Limoni and was begun in autumn 1929.
Mountain Bike Crossing and Waterfall
For travel planning by bicycle, the mountain bike crossing of the Passo del Monscera is a route in its own right: it leads downhill via Graniga, San Lorenzo and Bognanco Fonti to Domodossola. The Cascata La Valletta is located in the village of Bognanco Fonti and can be reached in just a few minutes on foot. The Cascata La Valletta consists of two different drops, that is, two clearly separate sections of the waterfall.
Arriving via Domodossola
Bognanco can be reached via Domodossola’s international FS railway station. The station is served by connections from Bern and Milan, and a scheduled bus to Bognanco departs from the bus station.
