Belgirate and the Motta Rossa promontory
Belgirate lies at the end of the Motta Rossa promontory, whose eastern slope separates the lower basin of Lake Maggiore from the Golfo Borromeo.
The parish church of Santa Maria della Purificazione e San Carlo is a neoclassical church in Belgirate. The Museo della Baita della Libertà is a small ethnographic museum in Belgirate with everyday objects, agricultural tools, antique furniture and other artefacts relating to local history.
Churches and local history
The Museo della Baita della Libertà is connected with an episode of the partisan war in which the Georgian resistance figure was involved. The street below is named after the Georgian resistance figure. Villa Conelli was built in the second half of the 19th century by the architect Eugenio Linati as a U-shaped urban palazzo.
Villa Conelli has an Italian garden, a small wood, a boat landing and a former stable complex. Inside the Oratorio di San Paolo there are frescoes depicting Christ in a mandorla, the Apostles and the cycle of the months.
The Oratorio di San Paolo can be reached from the SP 125 via a footpath with a white signpost. A boulder near the Oratorio di San Paolo bears carved cup marks.
Easy trails around Belgirate
The “Historic center and lakeside ring” circular route is an easy hike for all fitness and experience levels; the paths are easy to walk. The “Anello Belgirate – Lesa” circular route is a simple, flat trail connecting Belgirate and Lesa. The different names help with selection: the first circular route relates to the town centre and lakeside, while the second relates to the connection to Lesa.
The Sentiero dei Castagni leads to the Chiesa Vecchia di Santa Maria in Belgirate. From the terrace of the Chiesa Vecchia di Santa Maria, there is a view across the rooftops of the town.
The Chiesa Vecchia di Santa Maria is located in Belgirate just over ten minutes’ walk from the town centre, beyond the railway on the hill near the cemetery.
Beach, boats and water sports
Belgirate has a public beach. Sailing boats and motorboats are rented in Belgirate. At Polaris Yacht in the Marina di Belgirate, canoes can be rented for one or two hours.
Windsurfing is offered in Belgirate through the Associazione Windsurf Belgirate. Diving activities are offered in Belgirate through Club Sub Il Sciatt.
Polaris Yacht in the Marina di Belgirate offers three-hour sailing trips with a skipper to explore particularly impressive areas of Lake Maggiore and its islands.
