Historic Centre and Art

The medieval historic centre of Sarnano preserves the layout of a walled town, with old streets, stairways and impressive views. When exploring the town centre, the stairways should be taken into account as part of the local routes. Anyone exploring the town centre on foot should include the historic streets and stairways in their orientation within the medieval urban space and in their daily route planning.

The Church of Santa Maria di Piazza Alta is the main church in Sarnano’s historic centre. It contains frescoes and paintings of great historical and art-historical value. Construction began after Sarnano was elevated to municipal status in 1265 and was completed in 1396 with the construction of the tower. As the main church, it combines architectural history with frescoes and paintings.

The museum complex of Sarnano is located in the former Santa Chiara monastery in the historic centre. The complex includes the art gallery, the Museum of Sacred Art, the Museum of Ancient and Modern Weapons, the Avifauna Museum of the Sibillini Mountains and the Hammer Museum.

The art gallery in Sarnano displays Vittore Crivelli’s late-15th-century painting „Madonna Adorante il Bambino con angeli musicanti“.

Waterfalls and Mountain Nature

Near the historic centre, the Via delle Cascate Perdute connects three waterfalls: the Cascata dell’Antico Molino, the Cascata „de lu Vagnatò“ and the Cascatelle.

Wild orchids bloom on the Piani di Ragnolo above Sarnano from late May to mid-June. The flowering therefore provides a seasonal reference for nature planning above Sarnano. The orchid bloom offers a clearly defined period for observing nature on the Piani di Ragnolo above Sarnano.

Sarnano Ski Resort

Sarnano’s ski resort has around 15 km of pistes, 4 km of which have artificial snowmaking, as well as a snow park. The snow park adds another winter sports area to the pistes at Sarnano’s ski resort.

Thermal Waters and Wellness

Balneotherapy at the Terme di Sarnano uses the sulphurous-saline thermal water Terro and the oligomineral, bicarbonate-calcium water Tre Santi. Terro and Tre Santi differ in their mineral composition.

Sarnano’s municipal swimming pool has a wellness area with a hydrotherapy whirlpool, a Turkish bath and a steam room. The two facilities each have a different focus: thermal water at the Terme di Sarnano, and water, heat and steam facilities at the municipal swimming pool.
