Hills, Stream and Foothills

Folignano is located on a hill south of Ascoli Piceno. The municipal area of Folignano is predominantly hilly; the Marino stream crosses the municipal area of Folignano. The southwestern part of Folignano is more rugged and extends into the foothills at the foot of Montagna dei Fiori. To the northeast of Folignano rises the hill of Rocca di Morro. The topographical landscape therefore ranges from a single hill to the foothill area.

The Grotte di Sant Angelo is located in the vicinity of Folignano. The summit of Monte Piselli, the mountain of Monte Girella and the mountain of Monte Foltrone are also located in the vicinity of Folignano. These four landscape destinations complement the various descriptions of the terrain around Folignano with further prominent names for geographical orientation.

Archaeological and Historical Traces

Picenian necropolises were discovered near Folignano and in the hamlet of Piane di Morro. A bronze sword with a distinctive antenna-shaped hilt was also found in Piane di Morro. A necropolis is an ancient burial site. The term therefore refers to an area containing graves, not to a single building.

The ruins of Castello di Folignano have been preserved in Castel Folignano. Castello di Folignano was a fortress overlooking the Picene Valley. Today, the Palazzo with a bell tower and a clock from the early years of the century stands above the remains of Castello di Folignano. Both the preserved fortress remains and the Palazzo above them, with its bell tower, are therefore significant for understanding Castel Folignano.

In Roman times, Rocca di Morro was a strategic point known as Castrum Murciae. In Roman history, castrum refers to a fortified installation or military camp. A recovered mosaic is attributed to a Roman villa in Rocca di Morro, a hamlet of Folignano. The parish church of San Gennaro in Folignano preserves a gilded copper reliquary from the 16th century. A reliquary is a container in which a relic is kept.
