Arquata Del Tronto: Rocca, National Parks and Winter Activities

Natural Setting and Townscape

Arquata del Tronto is the only municipality in Europe whose territory lies within two national parks: the Monti Sibillini and the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga. The town center of Arquata del Tronto lies on a hill dominated by the imposing 13th-century Rocca, which overlooks the entire valley. The Rocca di Arquata rises on a rocky spur above the settlement. Its later fortifications include a tower dating from the 11th or 12th century.

Since Roman times, the Via Salaria has run through the Arquata area and served as an important transport and trade route. In Trisungo, a 1st-century BC milestone from the ancient Via Salaria has been preserved. The historic transport route and the distinctive Rocca give the town a clearly recognizable historical character.

Churches, Art and Crafts

The Church of San Francesco in Borgo di Arquata houses an extract from the Shroud of Turin. In Spelonga, a Turkish flag is kept in the Church of Sant'Agata. Capodacqua is home to a 16th-century octagonal temple dedicated to the Madonna del Sole. The frescoes in the Temple of the Madonna del Sole in Capodacqua are attributed to Cola d'Amatrice.

The Diego Pierpaoli Museum is located in the historic center of Arquata and is associated with modern art and the artistic movement of Immanentism founded by Professor Diego Pierpaoli. In Colle, the traditional production of charcoal has been preserved as an ancient craft.

Pretare also preserves historical traces of craftsmanship: the remains of a lime kiln can be found there, where limestone was processed to produce quicklime. In Capodacqua, the octagonal temple, with its dedication to the Madonna del Sole, also commemorates the town's religious and artistic history.

Hiking and Winter Sports

The hike from Forca di Presta takes 2.5 to 3 hours. It follows the upper edge of the centuries-old Macchia Cavaliera beech forest and then reaches the Rifugio Città di Ascoli mountain hut near Colle Cese.

The ski facilities at Forca Canapine comprise three ski lifts serving a network of 16 slopes of varying difficulty. For travel planning, the precise geographical distinction is important: the ski facilities are named Forca Canapine, while the hike begins at Forca di Presta and leads to the Rifugio Città di Ascoli mountain hut near Colle Cese.

Local Specialties and Festive Days

Fagioli fritti in brodo is a traditional dish from Pretare. Zochene and Frascatigli are handmade pasta specialties from Spelonga. Together, the two places represent distinct culinary traditions within the municipality.

The patron saint's festival of Arquata del Tronto, held in honor of the Santissimo Salvatore, takes place every year on the first Sunday in September.
