At an altitude of 1,800 metres, the Pista Valtellina features 5- and 10-kilometre cross-country skiing loops through an expansive plain and dense forests. The two route lengths give you clear guidance when planning how you would like to spend your days in Santa Caterina Valfurva. In addition to cross-country skiing, you will find marked trails, a natural ice rink and several starting points for hikes.

Cross-country skiing and winter activities

The La Fonte centre is located at the start of the Pista Valtellina and is run by the instructors of the cross-country skiing school. It has changing rooms, showers, a waxing room and storage facilities for clothing and equipment.

Santa Caterina also has a natural ice rink. Equipment rental is available nearby. If you would like to plan another winter activity alongside cross-country skiing, the ice rink offers a dedicated place to do so. The Santa Caterina Outdoor Bike School is also located in La Fonte and offers individual and group lessons, guided excursions and mountain bike rental.

Marked trails from La Fonte and the village

The marked Percorso dei Fiocchi loop begins at the La Fonte centre and can be completed without a guide. The Sentiero delle Sorgenti also leads from La Fonte through the forest to the village of Plaghera. From there, you can continue along the Sentiero Ponte delle Vacche.

Another trail starts in the village square: the Sentiero dei Forni follows Via Forni along the Frodolfo River to Rifugio Forni. Those wishing to compare different routes can therefore choose between starting at La Fonte and joining a route directly in the village.

Mountain scenery and challenging routes

The peaks of Pizzo Tresero and Punta Pedranzini are located in the immediate surroundings of Santa Caterina. Cima Dosegù and Cima Bianca are also nearby.

The Sentiero della Grande Guerra is a challenging loop that starts and ends at Rifugio Sunny Valley. This provides both the character of the route and the return to the starting point for your planning. The Monastery of St. John is also located in the wider area around Santa Caterina.

Information on Valle dei Forni and Val Zebrù

Valle dei Forni can be reached from Santa Caterina via a 4-kilometre paved road. There are large car parks in the village of Forni. Well-signposted trails and the main hikes start from there. This starting point is therefore clearly distinct from the routes that begin at La Fonte or in the village square.

Val Zebrù can only be accessed on foot. Car parks are available in Niblogo and Le Fantelle, a hamlet of Madonna dei Monti.
