San Carlo: Trekking Routes, Mountain Landscape and Culture

San Carlo is connected to several trekking and mountain biking routes, linking specific natural and cultural sites. The trekking route to the Church of Presedont begins at San Carlo Church and descends to the valley floor. The church itself was built as a result of a vow made by the residents of Semogo in 1636, intended to halt the spread of the plague in the Bormio area.

Routes between the church, stream and forest
The trekking route to the Church of Presedont follows comfortable paths along the Viola stream through a flat, peaceful natural landscape with typical alpine huts. Another route is offered by the Valle del Foscagno trekking route: it follows the Strada del Bosco along a densely wooded slope and reaches the Decauville, which connects Arnoga with Cancano. This route also runs from the Centro Sportivo di Semogo along the paved N185 road to San Carlo and crosses the Strada del Foscagno near the church.
The Sentiero del Conte runs through the Bosco del Conte, located opposite the town of San Carlo.
Mountain biking routes and route details
San Carlo is also connected to specific routes for mountain biking tours. The Sentiero Viola – Giro del Foscagno – Decauville route reaches San Carlo via Via Le Ponti. In the final section of Val Vezzola, it crosses the reservoir and then continues along a singletrack embedded in the forest. Here, the term refers to a narrow, one-way trail section; for planning purposes, the documented route details are therefore more important than a blanket assessment of the route as a whole.
On the La Val Viola da San Carlo route, the path becomes a gravel track at the Altumeira parking area. The route then climbs to Lago Viola. Numerous bike shuttles also operate in the area around San Carlo.
Mountain destinations around San Carlo
From the village of San Carlo, you can walk via Val Lia or Val Cardonè to the area of Cima Piazzi. The summit of Corno delle Pecore is also located in the immediate vicinity of San Carlo. The surrounding area includes the summits of Corno la Resa, Monte delle Scale and Punta Lago Nero.
Monastery and palaces in the surrounding region
The wider region around San Carlo is home to the Monastery of St. John, a monastery, as well as the palaces Palazzo Andres Giacomoni, Palazzo Pievani and Palazzo Parravicini. These destinations complement the trekking and cycling routes with cultural points of interest. Together with San Carlo Church, they create a spectrum encompassing sacred history, historic palaces, forest paths, streams, reservoirs and mountain landscapes.
