Fino Del Monte between the high plateau and architectural history

Il Convento: Cloister and courtyard

Il Convento has a distinctive cloister with brick arcades and columns made of Sarnico stone. The capitals feature typical 15th-century ornaments. Brick and Sarnico stone thus create contrasting material accents within the same complex. Il Convento was founded before 1520 by Caterina, the daughter of the Bergamo citizen Giovanni, son of Simeone Da Fin.

The courtyard of Il Convento is accessed through a Romanesque-style stone portal. Above this portal is a 15th-century fresco.

The parish church dedicated to St Andrew the Apostle

The parish church dedicated to St Andrew the Apostle is a building in the Neo-Renaissance style. Construction began in 1903, and it was inaugurated in 1911. The church is therefore one of the buildings in Fino Del Monte whose period of construction can be clearly assigned to the early 20th century.

The main altar of the parish church dedicated to St Andrew the Apostle features Moroni’s altarpiece from 1577. It depicts the Madonna, Jesus, Saint Andrew and Saint Peter. The church also contains Carlo Ceresa’s painting "The Descent from the Cross" from 1650. Architecture and painting provide two distinct points of connection for exploring the town.

Castello di Fino del Monte

Castello di Fino del Monte also preserves a specific architectural detail: its north façade has the best-preserved section of the old masonry made of Ceppo blocks. The material of the blocks characterizes this section of masonry and distinguishes it from the brick arcades and Sarnico stone columns in the cloister of Il Convento.

The portico of Castello di Fino del Monte appears to be the oldest part of the building and may date from the 13th century. This possible dating provides a historical connection that clearly predates the founding of Il Convento. At the same time, the classification of the portico explicitly remains a possibility and is not presented as a confirmed year.

Travel by car and bus

When travelling by car, the route from the A4 Milano–Venezia runs via the Bergamo exit and continues through the Valle Seriana to Clusone.

SAB buses run several times a day from Bergamo railway station to the area around Fino Del Monte. For travellers without their own car, Bergamo is therefore the starting point for a bus connection to the destination area.
