Tronzano Lago Maggiore between the lake, mountain trails and history
Accommodation in Tronzano Lago Maggiore
Tronzano Lago Maggiore combines the landscape of the lake with a distinctive mountain backdrop and trails leading to churches, viewpoints and Lago Delio. The Lombard shore of Lake Maggiore, wooded slopes and the history of small settlements shape the character of a stay here.

Landscape between Lake Maggiore and Monte Borgna
Tronzano Lago Maggiore lies on the Lombard shore of Lake Maggiore, on a slope approximately 350 m above the Verbano and below Monte Borgna. The municipal area covers approximately 11 km² and extends from the lake at about 193 m to Monte Borgna at about 1,160 m. This results in an elevation difference of approximately 1,000 m. The landscape therefore stretches from the lakeshore to the mountain areas and offers a clearly structured spatial setting.
Lago Delio lies between Monte Borgna (1157 m) and Monte Cadrigna (1300 m). Lago Delio is a small lake of glacial origin. From the centre of Tronzano, it is possible to climb up to Lago Delio; the lake can also be reached by a drivable road from Maccagno via Campagnano and Musignano.
Hiking trails with lake and mountain views
The wooded area around Tronzano is suitable for trekking. A circular trail leads to Ronco Scigolino and returns to the centre of Tronzano via Poggio; the trail is accessible to everyone on foot. The “Lago Maggiore e ritorno” circular trail is also interesting for finding your way through the area: its return route follows an old, carefully paved mule track through woods and meadows. The different trail characteristics combine woodland sections, historic paving and the return to the village.
The “Al Lago Delio dalla Mora” trail begins in front of the Chiesa di San Sebastiano in Bassano. It initially follows a paved mule track that turns into a path after approximately three kilometres; the trail then climbs towards Lago Delio. Another connection to the history of the village is provided by a comfortable, level and shaded forest road from Bassano to the church of Santa Maria Assunta. The routes described therefore clearly differ in terms of their starting points, surfaces and courses.
The circular trail to Ronco Scigolino and via Poggio opens up wide views over Lake Maggiore, the Castelli di Cannero, Cannobio and its valley, as well as farther north towards Monte Limidario (2187 m). The churchyard of Santa Maria Assunta also lies on a promontory and offers views across Lake Maggiore towards the Canton of Ticino and the Brissago Islands. Lakeshore, islands, valleys and mountain peaks thus appear from different parts of the landscape.
Churches, old paths and traces of the village
The church of Santa Maria Assunta is connected not only by the forest road from Bassano, but also with the churchyard on the promontory described above. In Tronzano, the present parish church was originally a small oratory, possibly built on the occasion of a plague. The Disciplinati worked as stonemasons in the village from 1540 until the middle of the 17th century and were probably the builders of the oratory.
On the way to Lago Delio, specifically on the route from Bassano via the Chiesetta della Mora, a prehistoric sanctuary is located in the hamlet of Crocetta. The surviving traces include an anthropomorphic depiction of a cross carved into a rocky promontory, along with further archaeological finds. The route to the lake therefore has an archaeological dimension in addition to its scenic character.
Visible “pile dell'orzo” have been preserved in the village. The worked stone blocks were used to dehusk barley and point to a historic working technique. The Museo Etnografico Sartorio-Banfi is located in Tronzano Lago Maggiore. Visits are possible by prior appointment; appointments can be arranged by email at museoezio@gmail.com.
