Gardens and local history
Cannero Riviera lies on a small alluvial plain. Over time, this plain was formed by deposits from the Cannero River, which carries water during periods of high water. Thanks to the mild summers and winters, lime trees, lemons, olives, oranges, palms, azaleas, rhododendrons and camellias thrive in Cannero Riviera. The Parco degli Agrumi features impressive terraced gardens and more than 17 plant species. Guided tours of the Parco degli Agrumi are available in summer by reservation. The summer tour must therefore be planned with a reservation.
The Museo Etnografico e della Spazzola documents traditional activities and trades such as woodworking and ironworking, agriculture, livestock farming and fishing. The Museo Etnografico e della Spazzola also covers industrial brush manufacturing, which shaped Cannero’s economy in the first half of the 20th century.
Trails, villages and defence history
From Cannero, you can walk to the gun emplacements on Monte Morissolo at an elevation of 1,311 metres. The Cadorna Line was built in 1916 as a defence system consisting of roads and fortifications.
A comfortable mule track connects Cannero with Donego; the walk takes around 20 minutes. The route to Donego can be planned with a walking time of around 20 minutes. Donego has medieval-looking stone houses. Narrow lanes lead to interconnected courtyards, and the small church of San Giovanni Battista dates from the 16th century.
A mostly scenic and relatively easy trail leads through the three districts of Ronché, Donego and Cassino. Only a few short uphill and downhill sections are more challenging. When choosing the route, these short, more demanding ascents and descents along the trail should be taken into account.
Lakeshore, islands and connections
The Lido of Cannero Riviera is located in a natural bay and offers a large, equipped sandy beach. The sandy beach is also accessible to wheelchair users and parents with pushchairs.
Navigazione Laghi operates the Cannero–Luino–Cannobio boat connection under routes 71, 72, 73, 88, 89, 90 and 91.
On the Via delle Genti from Cannobio to Cannero Riviera, you reach the small harbour, the lakeside promenade and the landing stage. At the landing stage, you can take a boat for the return journey; it is the starting point for planning the return route.
The Castelli di Cannero are located in the immediate vicinity of Cannero Riviera on two small islands fortified in the Middle Ages. The two islets are also known as Malpaga.
Events throughout the year
The Mostra sugli Agrumi di Cannero takes place every year in March. A popular local festival is held every year on the first Sunday in May at the S. Giuseppe chapel on the mule track from Cannero to Oggiogno.
Cannero Riviera is one of the municipalities involved in the activities of the Via GeoAlpina hiking project.
