Reggio Emilia: Museums, Historic Routes and Regional Traditions

Reggio Emilia combines sites of art and cultural history with extensive routes along the Crostolo and regional traditions. A particularly vivid introduction to the area's history begins at the Palazzo dei Musei: its presentation ranges from prehistory through the Etruscan presence and Roman conquest to the Early Middle Ages. The museum includes collections on art, archaeology and the natural sciences. The Palazzo dei Musei also has a permanent section with changing exhibitions dedicated to the work of Luigi Ghirri.

Culture

In the historic centre, the Teatro Municipale Romolo Valli provides an architectural focal point. Its neoclassical façade has a Doric portico with twelve columns. Another distinctive site is the Basilica della Beata Vergine della Ghiara, regarded as a masterpiece of Counter-Reformation art. Admission is free. A free app and QR codes on the interior pillars provide access to historical information and artistic details; the paintings can also be viewed under special lighting.

The Galleria Parmeggiani was formed in 1925 from three 19th-century collections. Its holdings include paintings, furniture, textiles, weapons, jewellery and further paintings. The gallery is housed in a building constructed between 1925 and 1928 to a design by engineer Ascanio Ferrari in the Gothic-Renaissance style.

Guided tours of the Chiostri di San Pietro last approximately 45 minutes. They include the outdoor garden, historic rooms, the monumental Chiostro Grande, the Sette Sale and the immersive virtual-reality experience “È pericoloso non sporgersi”.

History

The Museo del Tricolore approaches history from several perspectives. On the ground floor, it connects the Italian tricolour with contemporary art, creativity and educational workshops. The first floor recounts Reggio Emilia's political events from 1796 to the beginning of the Restoration. The museum also explains that delegates from Reggio, Bologna, Modena and Ferrara proclaimed the creation of the Cispadane Republic and the green, white and red flag on 7 January 1797.

The “Di piazza in piazza” route leads through Reggio Emilia's historic centre and connects churches, museums and other sights. In May, Fotografia Europea adds to the city's cultural programme as a photography event in Reggio Emilia.

Routes

The part of Parco del Crostolo south of Reggio covers 5.7 million square metres. Through green spaces, the Passeggiata Estense leads from the centre of Reggio Emilia to Parco del Crostolo and onwards to the Reggia di Rivalta and Villa d'Este. The Passeggiata del Crostolo comprises approximately 16 kilometres of a combined cycling and walking path, which can be used by bicycle or on foot.

Another hiking connection is CAI trail 646V. It connects Parco del Crostolo with the Rosta Nuova/Pappagnocca district and Parco delle Acque Chiare. From the city centre, access to the Via Matildica del Volto Santo is via the Ponte di San Pellegrino, reached through Porta Castello and Viale Umberto I.

The journey itself also has a notable architectural and transport-historical connection: Stazione AV Mediopadana is the only high-speed railway station between Milan and Bologna and was designed by Santiago Calatrava.

Regional Tradition

The culinary profile includes Erbazzone Reggiano, a savoury pie and a symbol of Reggio's culinary tradition. Traditional balsamic vinegar cellars can be visited in the Reggio area.
