Modena: Cathedral, Museums, Trails and Nature

The cultural, hiking and nature highlights in Modena and its surroundings include the cathedral, museums, hiking trails and areas for nature observation. Modena Cathedral is an outstanding example of early Romanesque art from the 12th century. Ghirlandina is the soaring civic tower that forms part of Modena’s World Heritage Site. Piazza Grande is located on the historic Via Emilia in Modena’s medieval centre. The Musei del Duomo display art and liturgical objects dating from the Romanesque period through to the 19th century.

Culture and History

The Casa Museo Luciano Pavarotti was opened to the public in 2015. The singer’s home, built in the countryside around Modena, remains just as the maestro left it and can be visited in its entirety. It comprises 12 rooms across four floors; Pavarotti spent the final years of his life here.

The Museo Enzo Ferrari in Modena opened to the public on 10 March 2012. It preserves the original family home and mechanical workshop in the house where Enzo Ferrari was born in 1898. The design of the new exhibition gallery recalls the bonnet of historic racing cars. At Parco Montale, visits include demonstrations of traditional craft techniques and workshops for children about the world of the Terramare.

Trails and Landscape

The Anello dei Sassi is an 8.5-kilometre, two-and-a-half-hour hiking trail from Pieve di Trebbio to Pieve di Trebbio. The Percorso Natura begins at the Sant'Ambrogio bridge in Modena Est and runs for almost 34 kilometres to Casona di Marano sul Panaro; it can be used on foot or by bicycle. Another hiking trail, approximately 48 kilometres long, leads from Casona di Marano to Monte Belvedere near Montese and can be used on foot, on horseback or by bicycle.

The recommended routes include surfaced trails for pedestrians and various wheeled modes of transport, including bicycles, scooters, wheelchairs and pushchairs.

Nature Observation

A wetland with areas of open water that has been restored to a more natural state in recent years is home to various rare bird species and is suitable for birdwatching. Methane in the subsoil, escaping through fissures in the ground, creates flows of salty mud lava and small volcanoes with craters, explosions and gas emissions.

An area of natural interest includes farmland, sand and gravel pits, as well as areas for water sports, and provides a habitat for various bird species.

Food and Visiting Hours

The Museo dell'Aceto Balsamico Tradizionale in Spilamberto showcases all stages of balsamic vinegar production: from selecting the vineyards and building the barrels to the grape harvest, pressing and cooking the must, and finally the vinegar cellar. During opening hours, the museum offers guided tours in Italian and English every day at 10:45, 12:00, 14:00 and 15:30. Reservations are strongly recommended on weekdays and are required at least one day in advance on weekends and public holidays.
