Discover Kópháza: Culture, History and Views
Accommodation in Kópháza
Kópháza can be explored through several distinct themes: the history of the Croatian population in western Hungary, local exhibitions, historic buildings and a viewpoint on the vineyard hill. When planning your stay, you can choose among these stops according to your interest in culture, history or landscape. Some visits require an appointment in advance; other details are mainly useful for finding your bearings.
Church and local history
The Baroque Church of Sarlós Boldogasszony was built in the second half of the 18th century with the support of Count Antal Széchényi. It is also associated with a later historical event: Count Ferenc Széchényi and Countess Julianna Festetics were married there in 1777.
Another memorial is the “Jövő emlékműve” (“Monument to the Future”). It commemorates the “Battle of Kópháza” on 15 August 1989, four days before the Pan-European Picnic. Visitors interested in the more recent history of the village can view this monument alongside its older historical landmarks. The permanent exhibition “Nyakkendőn innen és túl – a horvátság története Nyugat-Magyarországon” (“With and Without a Tie – The History of Croats in Western Hungary”) focuses on the history and culture of Croats in western Hungary. It complements the local memorial sites with a distinct perspective on the region’s cultural history and is presented as a permanent exhibition.
Exhibitions and planning your visit
The local history exhibition of Kópháza is located in the attic of the mayor’s office. It is therefore separate from the permanent exhibition on the history of Croats in western Hungary. The history and traditions of the predominantly Croatian population are also presented along the Kópháza Local History Educational Trail. The exhibition and trail offer different ways to explore the area: an exhibition at a specified location and a route focused on local history.
Visits to the Croatian Farmhouse are possible by appointment. Appointments can be made in person at the mayor’s office during office hours or by calling +36 99 531-069. Guided tours of the house can be requested in Hungarian or Croatian. Confirm the appointment and the availability of a guided tour before travelling; the option to request a tour does not guarantee one. This allows you to include the visit in your travel plans rather than assuming it will be possible as a spontaneous stop.
Vineyard Hill and the viewpoint
The lookout tower stands on Vineyard Hill, known as Gora. It was built in 2014 through a collaboration between the local municipality and TAEG Rt. From the tower, you can see the Sopron Mountains and Lake Fertő; visibility of these sights may vary depending on conditions.
The tower can be reached from Main Road 84 via the Local History Educational Trail. Visitors planning to see the viewpoint can also follow a route focused on the history and traditions of the village. Check local conditions before setting out, and plan according to whether your main interest is the view, the local history trail or a combination of both.
Context within the wider destination
The wider Raab-Wieselburg-Ödenburg destination includes other landscape and cultural heritage themes that should be considered separately from Kópháza. These include the Fertő/Neusiedler See cultural landscape, with wetlands, saline soils, reed beds and shore areas. Lake Neusiedl also forms the core of Fertő-Hanság National Park; the Hungarian part of the lake has been protected since 1977. The Fertő-táj cultural landscape was awarded UNESCO World Heritage status on 13 December 2001.
The Benedictine Abbey in Pannonhalma, founded in 996, and Esterházy Palace in Fertőd are also distinct cultural heritage themes within the wider Raab-Wieselburg-Ödenburg destination. The palace is considered an outstanding example of Hungarian Baroque-Rococo palace architecture. When deciding which themes to include in your travel plans, it helps to distinguish between the local stops in Kópháza and the other cultural and landscape highlights of this wider destination.
