Gahma was first mentioned in official records in 1071. The municipality describes the place as originally a Slavic village.

Near Neumühle lies a former granite quarry that is considered a site of geological interest. Zschachenmühle is home to a mineral museum with a shop; it also features scrap art operated by an association and other attractions. The Neumühle and Zschachenmühle mills associated with Gahma preserve evidence of an earlier cutting and milling tradition in the Sormitz Valley. However, neither mill has survived in its typical historic form.

In the area around Gahma are Ebersdorf Castle, the New Lobenstein Castle, the Old Lobenstein Castle and Lauenstein Castle.

Landscape

The Sieglitzberg is also located near Gahma. The Fairy Grottoes are situated in the wider regional area. Roßbühl and the Großer Silberberg are also nearby.

Gahma itself lies at an elevation of approximately 590 metres above sea level. The associated Neumühle, Zschachenmühle and Grubersmühle mills are located lower down in the Sormitz Valley.

The village and its surroundings are primarily shaped by agriculture.

Gahma is a locality in the municipality of Remptendorf in the Saale-Orla district of Thuringia. The road from Leutenberg to Bad Lobenstein runs through Gahma.
