Culture and World Heritage as Reasons to Travel
The Arche Nebra visitor centre is located at the site where the Nebra Sky Disc was found. In the planetarium there, the show “A Journey into the Universe of the Bronze Age”, specially produced for the visitor centre, is shown twice per hour. The Collection” at the Bauhaus Museum Dessau, featuring more than 1,000 exhibits on the history of the Bauhaus school in Dessau.
Bauhaus Dessau is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Bauhaus building, the Masters’ Houses and the Törten housing estate invite visitors to take part in guided tours, workshops and discussions about design and society. Saxony-Anhalt has a total of six UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Nature between the Harz, Elbe and Southern Harz
In the Harz, the national park protects more than 240 square kilometres of natural habitat. Black storks, wildcats, lynx and boreal owls find refuges there. More than 560 kilometres of hiking trails and guided tours with rangers offer different ways to experience the landscape. The Middle Elbe UNESCO Biosphere Reserve protects one of the last near-natural floodplain landscapes in Central Europe and stretches for 300 kilometres along the Elbe. In contrast, the Southern Harz Karst Landscape Biosphere Reserve is characterised by some of Europe’s significant gypsum karst landscapes; the Karst Hiking Trail runs through this area for more than 230 kilometres.
The Drömling also represents a landscape of its own. This water-rich cultural landscape is criss-crossed by ditches, wet meadows and wooded islands. Cranes, storks, white-tailed eagles and more than 400 endangered species use the area as a resting and breeding ground. Observation towers, nature farms and guided tours make the Drömling accessible year-round.
Cycling Routes for Stages and Day Trips
The Elbe Cycle Route follows the Elbe through Saxony-Anhalt for just under 350 kilometres, from Havelberg in the north to Lutherstadt Wittenberg in the south. The Saxony-Anhalt section of the Saale Cycle Route runs for around 180 kilometres between Saaleck and Barby. For a thematic connection between Halle (Saale) and Arche Nebra, the 71-kilometre Sky Disc Cycle Route is an ideal choice.
The FĂĽrst Franz Garden Realm Tour offers further possibilities, linking parks and palaces over 72 kilometres. The Wandernester routes are certified circular trails through species-rich forests, moors, open fields and green floodplains. Suitable for families and well signposted, the Heide-Biber Tour leads to beaver dams, birdsong and quiet forest paths.
Water, Wine and Arrival
Lake Goitzsche offers opportunities for swimming, sailing and cycling. In the Saale-Unstrut-Triasland Geo-Nature Park, vineyards, limestone cliffs and historic cultural landscapes meet. Hiking trails there lead through light dry forests, across sunny slopes and past orchards. Saale-Unstrut is Germany’s northernmost wine-growing region.
For arriving by train, Saxony-Anhalt is connected to Deutsche Bahn’s ICE network. Halle (Saale) and Magdeburg serve as railway hubs.
