Molsberg: Hotels and Accommodations
Molsberg Castle has stood on a basalt rock since 1766. The castle is unfinished and consists of a single rectangular wing. Those who choose Molsberg as a place to stay will want to find suitable accommodations.
Culture and History
Molsberg Castle was built before 1116 by the Lords of Molsberg. It was part of a chain of castles established to protect the trade route between Frankfurt and Cologne. In 1760, the castle was demolished to make way for a Baroque palace commissioned by Johann Philipp von Walderdorff. Molsberg Castle is located on today's B8, the historic trade route between Frankfurt and Cologne.
The rooms of the castle and the castle chapel are located under one roof. Michael Eytel created the stucco work on the chapel ceiling and in the altar niche. Restoration of the castle chapel took six years and was completed in 2007. Johannes Seiz designed the elaborate furnishings of the castle chapel.
The Schultheiß House opposite the former village school dates from 1688.
Park and Landscape
A garden with 258 plum trees and 12 pyramid trees was created at Molsberg Castle in 1785. The estate includes centuries-old trees and offers views over the surrounding hilly landscape. Two trees from the castle park were recognized as “German Champion Trees” in 2011.
Parts of the castle park are open to visitors from Easter until the end of October.
Paths and Events
The traditional Whitsun fair in Molsberg includes an open-air church service in the castle courtyard. A model of the former Molsberg Castle can also be viewed at Molsberg Castle. The restored garden pavilion serves as an exhibition space for contemporary art; two exhibitions in this artistic genre are held there each year.
The Westerwaldschleife cycling tour passes by Molsberg Castle. Also listed is an easy 13-kilometer hike that begins and ends in Steinefrenz, passes through hilly fields and meadows, and includes Molsberg Castle as one of its listed attractions.
