Nature
The Hasenwiese nature reserve covers around 4.0 hectares within the Guckheim municipal area. It protects habitats for rare and endangered wild plants and animal species. In addition, around 95 percent of Guckheim’s built-up area lies within the Secker Weiher–Wiesensee landscape conservation area.
Culture and History
St. Johannes was built between 1961 and 1963 to designs by the architect Hans Busch. Decorative basalt masonry characterizes the long sides. In the Diocese of Limburg, the church is regarded as an example of modern post-war church architecture.
The present-day Marienwald Chapel on the Rothenberg is a church building designed by the Westerburg architect Rudolf Hack. It was built from 1948 onwards and consecrated on November 12, 1950.
Trails
The Wotansweg W3 passes through Guckheim and follows the Westerburg–Sainscheid–Guckheim–Weltersburg–Girkenroth–Berzhahn circular route. The trail is approximately 17.5 kilometers long and is marked in both directions with a yellow W3 on a black background. The route includes forest and meadow paths as well as paved farm roads.
The 5.6-kilometer Guckheim History Circular Trail begins at the community center and leads through the village and surrounding landscape via around 13 stations. Highlights include panoramic views, an orchard, the Bruno Koch Forest and Bird Educational Trail, the Marien Chapel, information about basalt quarrying and local lignite mining, the Elbbach River and a mill.
Regional Connections
The Backesdörfer Tour reaches Guckheim as part of a regional circular route. It connects villages that have revived the tradition of baking bread together. The tour also includes a cycle and walking path along the former railway line towards Westerburg.
