Katzwinkel lies where the Burbach, Lanzbach and Ringelbach streams converge and form the Gäsbach in the town centre. The village extends across an elevation of approximately 460 to 490 metres above sea level.

Nature and Trails

The Volcanic Eifel is considered a landscape characterised by uplands, dense forests, clear streams, fragrant meadows and villages. More than one third of Katzwinkel’s 385-hectare municipal area is forested.

Katzwinkel has around 7.5 kilometres of municipal hiking trails. The village is also connected to the cycling network via the Ahr–Moselle Cycle Route and Cycle Route No. 30. The Karl Kaufmann Trail, the Eifel Club’s main hiking trail No. 2, runs through Katzwinkel’s municipal area for approximately 1.5 kilometres.

Excursions

In addition to the Eifelsteig, eight other Volcanic Eifel trails are considered well-equipped hiking routes with high quality standards. The Moselle is approximately 20 kilometres from Katzwinkel and offers vineyards and castles as excursion destinations. Most of the Eifel maars are no more than 10 kilometres from Katzwinkel.

The Teufelsstein is a roughly two-metre-wide, rounded mass of solidified lava with a rough surface.

History and Sacred Sites

The Afelskreuz is located approximately 1.5 kilometres northwest of Katzwinkel and can be reached via Hiking Trail 7. In the forest on the ridge between Uess and the Lieserbach stands a wooden-beam cross measuring 3.30 metres. The cross stands on an old Roman military road connected to a historic pilgrimage route leading to the tomb of Saint Matthias in Trier. A moderately difficult circular route of 9.9 kilometres passes by the cross.

The Catholic branch church of St Catherine in Katzwinkel is a three-bay hall church dating from 1810, which was modified around 1950/60. East of the built-up area of Katzwinkel, on the road to Uess, stands a wayside shrine in the form of a round, enclosed masonry structure. From 1950 onwards, the initiative to build a new chapel at another suitable location in Katzwinkel was pursued under the Uess parish priest Johannes Tempel.

Archaeological finds indicate that the area around Katzwinkel was already settled more than 4,000 years ago. Finds at Scheidheck document settlement during the Roman period from 50 BC to 500 AD.

Customs

On Whit Monday, the string of eggs blown out during egg singing is hung up in Katzwinkel’s town centre. During egg singing, the collected eggs are pierced and blown out; they are then seasoned with herbs, cooked as scrambled eggs in a frying pan and eaten on bread.
