Culture and History
Guided tours explain the castle’s development and medieval life. Special tours designed for children are also offered; the tours last around 90 minutes.
In the centre of Grimburg, the Grimburg Castle and Witch Museum is housed in a farmhouse dating from the 18th century. Original finds from Grimburg are on display there, including coins, locks, tools, household objects, crockery, jewellery, stove plates and bricks.
Grimburg was built at the end of the 12th century as a territorial castle of Trier. The museum also focuses on the history of the persecution of witches in the Trier region. Large-format panels and facsimiles document the witch trials. A media room explores the castle landscape of the former Electorate of Trier during the time of Archbishop and Elector Baldwin of Luxembourg. The exhibition also documents that more than 200 men and women from the Hochwald region died as alleged witches in a charcoal burner’s hut.
Natural Environment
The Wadrilltal nature reserve between Felsenmühle and Grimburg covers around 213 hectares and includes parts of Grimburg. The meadows through which the Wadrill flows are protected.
The Saar-Hunsrück-Steig stage from Grimburgerhof to Reinsfeld begins at the partially reconstructed Grimburg Castle on a ridge above the Wadrilltal. It follows the quiet, natural Wadrilltal and offers changing views of its stream landscape. From the valley near Grimburgerhof, a path gradually climbs towards Grimburg. The ascent to the castle tower opens up views across the Wadrilltal.
Hiking and Cycling Trails
Near Grimburg, the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig branches off; hikers can continue along one route towards Trier. The stage from Grimburgerhof to Kell Reservoir meets the Ruwer-Hochwald Cycle Route and serves as an access route for visitors travelling to Kell. It ends at Kell Reservoir, which offers numerous recreational opportunities.
The Ruwer-Hochwald Cycle Route is fully paved and designed for cyclists, inline skaters and walkers. Grimburg Castle can be reached directly from the route or via a detour.
