Discover Vordereifel: Nature, Hiking Trails and Castles

Vordereifel combines volcanic landscapes with expansive ridges, idyllic valleys, and hiking and cycling tours. Multi-day active tours are also part of what the holiday region offers. Short circular trails, longer routes, and guided tours complement the nature and cultural attractions.

Landscape with juniper heaths and panoramic views

The juniper heaths of Vordereifel are a defining feature of the landscape. Together with the areas in the neighboring Ahrweiler district, they are among the largest remaining stands on acidic bedrock in Rhineland-Palatinate and the adjacent federal states. The heathlands give the region its own character and combine nature observation with trails offering panoramic views.

Dr. Heinrich Menke Park is located as a nature reserve on the western foothills of the Raßberg. The 25-meter-high Boos Eifel Tower offers wide-ranging views over the Eifel landscape.

At Wabelsberg near Langscheid, the heath garden combines an educational trail with a botanical garden. Information panels explain the characteristic plant species of the heath. Thus, alongside the extensive juniper heaths, there is a place where the typical heath plants can be viewed individually.

The trails and destinations therefore alternate between open heathlands, protected areas, sections of forest and meadows, historic sites, and insights into mining.

Hiking trails for short and extended tours

The Traumpfade in Vordereifel lead through forests, fields, and meadows. Those who prefer open landscapes will find the Bergheidenweg Traumpfad, a route through heathland into the Heidbüchel nature reserve.

For a shorter, clearly defined hike, the Virneburger Burgblick Traumpfädchen is suitable: the circular trail is 3.5 kilometers long, easy, and family-friendly. It leads to the ruins of Virneburg Castle. By comparison, the Mühlsteinwanderweg is designed as an approximately 13-kilometer long-distance hiking trail. Its route runs from the Mayen mining field via the Ettringer Lay and the Kottenheimer Winfeld, passing the Mendig clay lake, to Hof Michels on Mendig’s Brauerstraße. The Mühlsteinwanderweg can be hiked in both directions.

Cycling at various levels

The Vordereifel holiday region also offers various opportunities for cycling tours. Mountain bikers can explore the region on specially designated mountain biking routes. There are also cycle paths for all levels of difficulty.

Mining, castles, and viewpoints

Visitor attractions in Vordereifel include the Bendisberg Mine Visitor Mine, Bürresheim Castle, the ruins of Löwenburg and Philippsburg in Monreal, the ruins of Virneburg Castle, museums, and viewpoints. The three-adit Bendisberg Mine Visitor Mine offers insights into the interior of the Earth. Tours through one, two, or three adits also provide information about the geology and the mining techniques used to extract the ore deposit.

Admission to Bürresheim Castle is only possible as part of a guided tour. Another viewpoint, the Hochsimmerturm, can also be climbed. At Naturerlebnis Vordereifel, visitors can also visit, hike to, and climb four landscape monuments and a visitor mine.
