Nature and trails
Several hiking trails run through Oberlascheid, including the Bach Trail. It follows the Alfbach, Donsbach, Ihrenbach, and Dürenbach streams and runs along the Belgian border in sections. The route is 14.0 kilometers long, rated easy, and designed as a circular trail between Halenfeld and Bleialf.
Three shelters and five benches are available to hikers in the municipality. Oberlascheid and Radscheid are also located along district road 104.
History and architectural heritage
Oberlascheid was first mentioned in historical documents in 1187 under the name “langescheit.” A visible testament to the village’s history is the Chapel of Saint Stephen, which is a legally protected cultural monument. Its nave and choir acquired their present form around 1848; older structural elements were probably incorporated at that time.
At the chapel, a figure of Gangolph has been preserved at the entrance, as has a depiction of the Throne of Mercy above the entrance. The veneration of Saint Arnulfus once attracted pilgrims to Oberlascheid and contributed to its nickname, “Schwingslascheid.”
The former school with a teacher’s residence at Ortsstraße 14 is also part of the historic buildings. The building dates from 1887 and is now used as a residence. In neighboring Radscheid, the village was first documented as “Rottescheid” as early as 1287.
Local tradition
The local traditions include Burgbrennen. On this occasion, a large fire is lit on the first Sunday after Carnival.
