Nordenau combines winter sports in the village with circular trails and historic destinations.

Winter sports and winter experiences in Nordenau

At the village's own ski lift in Nordenau, you can ski or snowboard. There is also a small sledding slope near Nordenau. For winter planning, this means distinguishing between a ski lift in the village and a small sledding slope near Nordenau.

A torchlight hike around Nordenau is part of the traditional end-of-year celebrations. It leads through the village with torches and ends at the Haus des Gastes with mulled wine and children's punch. Nordenau's spa gardens feature walking paths, a playground, a water-treading pool, a football pitch and ponds.

Circular trails through the Sauerland mountain landscape

The approximately 11-kilometre Osterglockenweg begins in Nordenau and leads through the Sauerland mountain landscape. Its approximate length makes the circuit a longer hiking route for day planning. For a walk, the route should be treated as a separate, longer section; the approximate distance should therefore be taken into account in the day's schedule.

The Osterglocken circular trail starts and ends at the Haus des Gastes on Sonnenpfad, where parking is available. The return route therefore leads back to the starting point, meaning that parking is located in the start and finish area.

The circular trail around Nordenau (No2) leads from Nordenau through the Wesenberg nature reserve to Hubertusstein and then back to Nordenau.

The circular trail around Nordenau (No4) first leads up to the Heerhagen high plateau. It then continues via Nesselbach and subsequently via the Westfalenhang ski lift back to Nordenau. The S40 bus route, which runs through Nordenau, can be used to travel to the starting point of this circular trail. The reference stop is “Kirche”.

Half-timbering, slate and Rappelstein

Nordenau has the character of a historic half-timbered village. Some houses are more than 200 years old. Slate mining shaped the settlement, and slate is visible on many houses. As you walk through Nordenau, half-timbering and slate therefore emerge as two visible elements of the village's appearance.

The Rappelstein castle ruins are regarded as a permanent historic landmark of Nordenau and now serve as a viewing platform. From there, the view stretches across Nordenau, the Nesselbach valley and the Land of 1,000 Mountains.

The Nordenau local history museum is located in the Haus des Gastes at Sonnenpfad 2. The Haus des Gastes is therefore both the museum site and the starting and finishing point of the Osterglocken circular trail. Visits are possible during the office hours of Nordenau Touristik e. V.; additional visiting times can be arranged by request.

Healing tunnel and different day plans

The temperature in the Nordenau healing tunnel is around 8°C all year round. The humidity there is almost 100 percent. The air is almost free of dust particles, pathogens and allergy-causing pollen. The healing tunnel therefore differs climatically from the outdoor trails and village destinations described. For a day with outdoor trails, the healing tunnel thus represents a clear change of surroundings.
