Landscape between grassland, the Wenne and riparian forests

The “Open Spaces West and South of Lochtrop” landscape conservation area covers 4.5 hectares. It includes slopes used as grassland on the western outskirts of Lochtrop as well as grassland in the southern area. The protected open space lies between the settled area and the expansive surroundings, which are characterised by forests and Christmas tree plantations. On the western outskirts, open slopes are followed by wooded areas. The designation serves to preserve the severely restricted open space between the settled area and the expansive surroundings.

The “Wenne and Tributary near Lochtrop” landscape conservation area covers 16.4 hectares across two sections. In this protected area, the Wenne meanders largely freely and is lined with trees and shrubs in places. The original valley of the tributary is used exclusively as grassland. Thus, both the watercourse and the adjacent wooded and grassland areas form part of the described protected area.

South of Lochtrop, the “Riparian Forests / Watercourses South of Lochtrop” area covers 1.508 hectares. The “Watercourse from Frielinghausen to Lochtrop” area is listed as covering 0.845 hectares. Both areas lie along watercourses and are smaller than the landscape conservation area around the Wenne and its tributary. The smallest area lies between Frielinghausen and Lochtrop, while the largest is at the Wenne and Tributary near Lochtrop protected area.

Routes with specific connections to local places

In the regional context, the 84-kilometre SauerlandRadring is of significance. It is designed for families and touring cyclists, connects Finnentrop, Lennestadt, Schmallenberg and Eslohe, and follows a former railway line. The total length is a fixed factor when planning a ride on the ring. A complete ride requires planning for the ring’s total distance of 84 kilometres.

The Eslohe Family Tour passes through Lochtrop on its way to Frielinghausen. Lochtrop is therefore explicitly included in the route of this regional tour.

The first stage of the Eslohe Grenzgänger route from Schartmecke to Frielinghausen passes Lochtrop before reaching Frielinghausen. The connection to the village is on the section before the stage destination of Frielinghausen. For orientation on this stage, the direction from Schartmecke to Frielinghausen is decisive.

Village history and Highland Games

Lochtrop’s history is connected with the neighbouring villages of Bremke, Frielinghausen and Husen. On 7 November 1919, these villages founded a St. Antonius collection association. Its aim was to raise the funds required to establish a Catholic church service in Bremke through collections.

In 1948, the villages of Frielinghausen, Lochtrop, Husen and Bremke formed the St. Antonius Eins. m.e.V. parish vicarage with its own asset management. Lochtrop was therefore part of this association of the four villages.

Highland Games have been held in Lochtrop since 2016. Every two years, the local Highlander Verein invites people to Erves-Scheune. There, men and women compete in Scottish contests. The event is therefore tied to Lochtrop and the venue, Erves-Scheune.
