In Gierskopp, the Olsberg Kneipp Hiking Trail, water sources, religious history and local events come together. The Olsberg Kneipp Hiking Trail begins and ends at the Red Bridge on Roten Weg in the Gierskopp district. There is also a wading station at the Gierskopp, the Gierskoppbach stream as part of the natural surroundings, as well as the Marien Grotto and the Schultenhof farm in the district.

Hiking trails with varying levels of difficulty

The Olsberg Kneipp Hiking Trail is a difficult circular hiking trail with a length of 41 kilometres. Along the route, hikers have to manage approximately 1,366 metres of elevation gain and approximately 1,369 metres of elevation loss. The approximate elevation figures make it clear that this is an endurance tour with many ascents and descents. Returning to the Red Bridge on Roten Weg is part of the documented route.

The Springs Tour leads to the wading station at the Gierskopp, which is also known as “An der Scharfsbrücke”. At this spot, hikers can take a break and cool their feet. Spending time at the wading station therefore differs from the activity involved in the 41-kilometre circular hiking trail: Here, the focus is on a specific station at the Gierskopp, while the Kneipp Hiking Trail is designed as a long, difficult circular route.

Water as a recurring theme

The Gierskoppbach stream is part of the natural surroundings along the Olsberg Kneipp Hiking Trail. The water-focused concept includes natural spring-water wading stations as well as numerous Kneipp wading stations and arm-bath pools. These terms refer to different forms of water application within the trail concept: At the wading stations, visitors move through water, while arm-bath pools are intended for the arms.

The spiritual hiking trail “Ruhrauen – Das Licht der Kerze” also turns off at the Gierskoppbach stream, follows the Kneipp AktivWeg Olsberg along the Gierskopp and then continues along the Ruhr.

Cycling route and local history

Gierskopp is also included in the road cycling tour “Nach Wasserfall”. The tour runs through Gierskopp via the L743.

A historical focal point is the Marien Grotto. It was built in 1912 as a place of prayer near the Gierskoppbach stream, completed within four months and ceremonially inaugurated in October 1912. Around 1925, a war memorial for the Gierskopp residents who fell in the First World War was incorporated into the grounds of the Marien Grotto.
