Historic Center and Herbstein Traditions
Herbstein’s historic town center is laid out in a ring and surrounded by a walkable town wall with defensive towers. At the market square, a half-timbered town hall and half-timbered houses form an ensemble. In the old town, you can experience both the distinctive layout of the center and the half-timbered architecture around the market square.
Beneath the market square lies the Gewölbe, the underground remains of a former castle dating from the 13th century. It is also a noteworthy geological site. At the STATT Museum, visitors can explore evidence of 750 years of Herbstein’s history, including the market square ensemble and the underground castle vault. As the museum’s visitor offerings may change, check what is currently available before your visit.
Herbstein Foaselt, a carnival tradition dating from the 17th century, is also part of the local culture. In the associated Springerzug procession, the Bajazz leads the group. This tradition offers a different way to connect with the town’s history than its buildings: here, the focus is on customs handed down through generations.
VulkanTherme and Spa Park
The VulkanTherme is supplied by therapeutic water at around 32.6°C, drawn from a depth of more than 1,000 meters. The VulkanSauna in Herbstein includes a steam bath with low temperatures, a traditional Finnish sauna, a bio sauna with scent and aromatherapy, and an outdoor log sauna. As the facilities may change, check the current setup before your trip.
The spa park is located right in front of the VulkanTherme and offers plenty of space for walks. Several hiking trails, including terrain therapy trails, also start there. The park offers a mini-golf course, a Pit-Pat course, and a disc golf course for recreation; check their current availability before your trip. The VulkanTherme also offers regular water aerobics sessions, which are included in the admission price. Check the current schedule before your visit.
Hiking and Views
For a longer outing, try the Herbstein Extratour “Felsentour”: it is 19.0 kilometers long, rated moderate, and listed as taking 5 hours and 30 minutes. Felsenruhe is located northwest of Herbstein on the southern slope of the Kirchwald and forms a rock face up to 8 meters high. The natural monument is easily accessible to walkers and hikers; the Felsentour passes right by it. The listed length and duration provide a concrete basis for planning this route. Conditions on the trail may vary.
The spa park and the Felsentour suit different timeframes: the park offers plenty of space for walks and several hiking trails that start there, while the Extratour is listed as 19.0 kilometers long and taking 5 hours and 30 minutes. The Vulkanradweg also offers views of Herbstein’s townscape.
Visiting Conditions at the Bible Park
