Eschbach Cliffs: Scenery, Hiking and Climbing

The Eschbach Cliffs are 12-metre-high rock formations in the heart of the Usinger Land. They form a striking contrast with the gently rolling landscape of Taunus Nature Park. The Buchstein rock, also known as the Eschbach Cliffs, is a prominent destination for hikers and a popular climbing spot. From there, you can look out across the Usinger Basin and the Taunus. Palace Gardens and Events

The surviving grounds of the palace gardens lie close to the former Usingen Palace and Schlossplatz. Their origins date back to the 17th century, to the time of Walrad (1635–1702), the first Prince of Nassau-Usingen. The upper part of the palace gardens, which is in use today, includes a fountain, a monument to Prince Walrad erected in 1905, and a war memorial. The palace gardens also include the adjacent rose garden and a nature playground in the upper section. The gardens thus bring together historic memorial sites and a variety of landscaped areas.

Access to the nature playground may depend on local maintenance; check its condition before your visit. Various events take place in the palace gardens in summer, including a family festival during the Hessian summer holidays, a summer night festival and a rose garden festival. Museums: From Archaeological Finds to Local History

The Museum of Prehistory and Early History is located in the basement of the historic town hall. It displays archaeological finds from the Usinger Land dating from the Paleolithic to the Germanic period. The exhibition is open every other Sunday from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., from spring through autumn. Special guided tours outside regular opening hours can be arranged by appointment for groups, including school classes, and, in exceptional cases, for individuals. Check opening hours before your visit; a special guided tour requires an advance appointment.

The Usingen Town Museum in the historic Kavaliershaus presents famous Usingen personalities as well as historic household appliances and tools from the 17th century to around 1950. The two museums therefore have different focuses: the town hall museum centres on archaeological finds from early periods, while the Kavaliershaus features notable people and everyday objects. This distinction provides clear guidance when choosing which museum to visit.

Water Activities and Practical Information

Usingen’s Taunusbad has a 25-metre sports pool, 1-metre and 3-metre diving boards or platforms, and starting blocks. The Hattsteinweiher is located near Usingen, northwest of the town at the edge of the municipal forest. The body of water covers around 1.6 hectares and is about four metres deep. The bathing area has a sunbathing lawn, a sandy beach and a designated non-swimmer area. The facilities clearly differ: the Taunusbad offers a sports pool and diving facilities, while the nearby bathing area has a sunbathing lawn and beach.

Parking is available in the immediate vicinity of the Eschbach Cliffs and near the Hattsteinweiher. As parking availability can change, check the current situation before your visit. Usingen is well connected via the A3 and A5 motorways and is linked to the Rhine-Main Transport Association rail network.
