R3 Long-Distance Cycle Route and Pump Track

The Hessian R3 long-distance cycle route, also known as the Rhine-Main-Kinzig Cycle Route, runs from Rüdesheim am Rhein to Tann in the Hessian Rhön and passes right through Neuhof’s town centre. At the edge of town in the direction of Dorfborn, the Neuhof pump track is located directly beside the R3 cycle route.

The facility has a separate kids’ track. Its accessible design also enables wheelchair users to use it. The long-distance cycle route and pump track offer different ways to cycle in Neuhof: one runs through the town centre, while the other adds a dedicated track for children to the R3 at the edge of town.

Planetary Walking Trail and Kali Trail

Opened in 1999, the Planetary Walking Trail connects Neuhof and Kalbach. It is about ten kilometres long and shares fascinating facts about the sun, moons, planets and comets at eleven information boards. The starting point is above the large bus parking area at Johannes Kepler School, by the information board about the sun.

The Kali Trail offers a different focus. This circular route, created in 2023, is 17.4 kilometres long, starts in the centre of Neuhof and follows a wide loop around the municipality. It is designed for both local residents and tourists. Five information boards cover potash mining in Neuhof and the Fulda/Werra potash district, including the history of the Neuhof mine, work above and below ground, geology and the uses of potash products.

The two themed walking trails differ both in subject matter and length: the Planetary Walking Trail is about ten kilometres long, while the Kali Trail is 17.4 kilometres. One focuses on the sun and celestial bodies; the other on mining history, working life and geology.

Panoramic Trails and Their Stops

The panoramic trails also offer different highlights. The Opperzer Berg Panoramic Trail passes the beekeeping education centre, the Grotto of Mary and St Michael’s Church. Its named stops bring together nature-related topics, a religious site and a church along one route.

The Fliedetal+Kemmete Panoramic Trail follows the Fliede towards Neuhof. It then continues along a landscaped path above the motorway tunnel, where benches and impressive viewpoints can be found, and returns through Neuhof to Dallesplatz.

Historic Traces and Local Culture

A visible old section of the Via Regia between Neuhof-Ellers and Fulda is now once again part of the Way of St James towards Frankfurt. The historic road and today’s pilgrimage route meet here. Neuhof Water Castle was originally built as a castle and fortified around 1250 by Prince-Abbot Heinrich IV of Erthal (1249–1261) with new walls, fences and ditches. These details illustrate different aspects of the town’s history: a former fortification and an old stretch of road that is now once again incorporated into a pilgrimage route.
