At 832 m, the Schafstein is one of the local mountains of the municipality of Ehrenberg (Rhön). Located above Wüstensachsen, it is considered the largest sea of boulders in the Rhön, with its massive basalt blocks. Since 2000, it has been designated a core zone of the Rhön Biosphere Reserve. This puts a striking landscape and a specific hike in the spotlight: the “Der Ehrenberger” extra tour leads up to the Schafstein.
Hiking on the Schafstein
The starting point of the extra tour is the church in Wüstensachsen. From there, it leads out of the village behind the outdoor swimming pool and up to the Schafstein. A wooded path follows winding trails to the summit. At the top, there are views of the surrounding mountains and valleys in several directions. The route description thus connects a specific starting point in the village with the destination at the Schafstein and the views from its summit.
The extra tour runs through the Ehrenberg area and connects the municipality’s managed grazing lands between Wüstensachsen and Reulbach. Six experience stations explain how the Rhön’s managed grazing lands came about; they also explore the diversity of the flowering meadows and pastures. The route and stations offer different perspectives: the route connects places and grazing lands, while the stations focus on their origins and the meadow and pasture landscape.
Nature and culture in Ehrenberg
For a cultural excursion, the FCN Museum Ehrenberg-Thaiden displays exhibits on the former zonal border, the Rhön railways, as well as minerals and fossils. It is open seasonally from April to October. Check current access arrangements before your visit so you can plan your museum visit accordingly.

A Rhön selfie point is located above the Mariengrotte in Wüstensachsen. As its installation status may change, check before your visit whether the point is still there.

The Rhön in the district of Fulda, within the broader travel destination of Fulda, offers opportunities for hiking and cycling. The “Der Ehrenberger” extra tour is a specific local route: it runs through the Ehrenberg area and connects the municipality’s managed grazing lands between Wüstensachsen and Reulbach.
