Hilders is located in the heart of the Rhön Biosphere Reserve and the Hessian Rhön Nature Park. You’ll find a variety of options to plan your day: the bird trail, an easy circular walk, marked access routes to the HOCHRHÖNER® long-distance hiking trail, scenic views and stargazing at Buchschirm, and paths to historic sites. The activities vary in length and theme—from a roughly one-hour loop to a connection with a long-distance hiking trail.

Hiking trails with a variety of themes
The bird trail in Ritterschlucht is about 3 kilometres long. At 14 information boards, you can learn about local birdlife; QR codes let you listen to the calls of the birds featured at each stop. The trail combines exercise with nature-related information presented along the way.
Another option is the Rhön Circular Trail 1, “Ulster & Fish Nature Trail”. This easy, 3-kilometre loop starts at the Hilders community centre and follows the Ulster and the Fish Nature Trail, passing Sandenhof on the way back to Hilders. The stated walking time is about one hour, with an elevation gain of 27 metres. While the bird trail features information boards and bird calls, this loop has a specific walking time and a described circular route.
Hilders is directly connected to the HOCHRHÖNER® long-distance hiking trail by several marked access routes. You can start or continue your long-distance hike from Hilders. There is also a hiking bus for trips to selected starting points, from which you can hike back along a route of your choice. Operating days, fares and destinations may change, so check the current timetable before planning your trip.
Scenic views and stargazing at Buchschirm
Buchschirm is Hilders’ local mountain. At 746 metres, the “Krone” viewing platform offers 360° panoramic views across the Hochrhön, the Ulster Valley and far into Thuringia. Buchschirm is also home to the Ulstertal Star Cinema, with a special reclining lounger for observing the night sky. The viewing platform and stargazing offer different experiences in one place, so you don’t need to plan another attraction elsewhere.
For a cycling trip, the Milseburg Cycle Path follows the former Rhön Railway line through the countryside between Hilders and Fulda. Access to tunnels may change seasonally, so check current tunnel access information before setting out.
Local history and historic sites
The Hilders Historical Trail runs through the town centre. It introduces historic buildings, former inns, mills, churches and other notable places connected to the development of Hilders. The trail therefore focuses on the town’s history and its architectural heritage.
Another historic site is the ruin of Auersburg Castle on the southern slope of Auersberg. The site is a historic circular-walled fortification, probably built around or after 1350. Today, it is a popular destination for hikers and day-trippers. Together with the trail through the town centre, it offers another way to explore local history: one focuses on the development of Hilders, the other on a ruin and its historic fortifications.
The wider Fulda region
In the wider destination of Fulda, the Rhön offers opportunities for hiking and cycling in the district of Fulda. The Main-Kinzig-Fulda Summer of Culture is also part of this regional offering and has been held for more than 27 years. More than 100 events in music, theatre, art exhibitions, literature and other fields receive support as part of the festival.
